U S Senator Joe T Robison declares the 116 million appropriated for public works insufficient as unemployment rises and automation reshapes labor. He suggests five day week, long term municipal and state relief, and broad cooperation to ease distress during the crisis.
Two Christmas Eve crashes killed ten people in Wisconsin and Minnesota. The Schultz family of eight near Lomira perished when their car hit a Soo Line train. A second crash two miles north of Barnum killed four, with two more dying later.
Christmas scenes from Washington feature the Hoovers entertaining grandchildren with a White House celebration and a Christmas tree lighting. Elsewhere in Spokane a desert-border town kid receives a sky dropped Christmas tree told by pilot Jack O'Brien.
Harold A. Schmoeller aged 24 of 219 18 Iowa avenue died at Hershey hospital after a gun cleaning accident. A 16 gauge shotgun discharged, injuring him while he was alone preparing to hunt. The weapon borrowed from a friend, owned by Robert Leu, caused fatal injuries. He had worked at the Ed Leu garage for about two months.
Local weatherman William Molis notes a 1.4 foot rise in the river to 4.1 feet this morning, likely from an ice gorge below Muscatine. Temperature reached 36 degrees, up 22 degrees since Wednesday. Skies were partly cloudy with south winds as the forecast calls for cooler southeastern temperatures and unsettled weather Thursday with possible rain or snow.
Sacramento officials from Southern Pacific say about 10000 shop and maintenance workers in the northern district will return to full time duties on January 5 after two months of part time shifts three days weekly.

Deputy Marshal Menzo Grady and Officer John Alexander responded to a 5 am porch knock at a home where two elderly women found a small square package. Fearing a bomb they called police. the parcel turned out to be a Christmas gift delivered by a postal worker.
Four short term inmates escaped East View penitentiary by sawing bars with improvised tools and fled into snowy toad the state police and guards hunted them along roads into New York and the south. The convicts named are Charles Sirico Peter Reynolds James Clark and William Rapp.
Muscatine Salvation Army corps reports 167.56 from Christmas kettles plus other gifts to fund 40 baskets costing about 4 each containing potatoes meat bread butter jam canned goods and milk. Heinz company contributed food. baskets distributed by the corps and Christmas Eve supper served to about 100 people.
Pittsburgh AP Abe Perlin, 69, claims moonshine baths relieve rheumatism and says he neither drinks nor sells the liquor. Police seized five one gallon cans after a tailor shop raid and will investigate the bathing claim before detaining him further.
An early morning blaze on the second floor of a Whiting Indiana rooming house killed six men and left another with fatal burns. One occupant escaped by leaping to the ground while four on the first floor reached safety after alarms. Victims were Victor Mechevic 53 Matt Stitch 63 Joe Bebek 48 Thomas Casovich 35 John Lucic 34 Joe Lucic 49.
Iowa sees mostly cloudy skies with light snow possible in the east portion and cooler temperatures as Friday turns partly cloudy, mainly in the west. Illinois forecasts unsettled conditions tonight with light snow and rain in the south, followed by cloudy to partly cloudy conditions and cooler temperatures in the east.
The Norris Lucas dispute widens with Lucas denying Hoover's involvement. Lucas calls Norris claims malicious while Weed defends party ethics and asserts Hoover had no role. Howell demands Lucas resign over financed partisan literature and opposition to Norris.
A Chevrolet coupe driven by Kenneth Wagner of West Liberty and a Yellow taxicab driven by a man named Wilson collided at Eighth and Cedar streets around 1 30 this morning with no injuries. The taxi rode onto the Cedar street sidewalk and John Diercks lawn terrace. A second collision between a car driven by William Fishburn and Carl Freeman at Fourth and Walnut streets occurred about 8 47 Wednesday night with only minor damage.
The Hanford post of Iowa allegedly won the best singing and marching delegation at the National Legion convention in Boston. A ceremonial loving cup arrived for Hanford, though doubts linger about the victory. Iowa officials named a prominent group led by Hanford MacNider and others in the parade as the winning delegation.
Reports describe a meteor explosion lighting up north central Idaho with a bright flash seen across 50 to 60 miles. The blast occurred around 10 57 p m near Troy timber damage unknown but several hundred witnesses reported the stunning display.
