Washington D C Dec 22 In the Christmas mail surge the post office department ordered a large expansion of packing and transport aid. The move includes 175000 burlap bags to augment daily deliveries, extra transportation gear such as cars wagons and a number of emergency hires in railway mail services and city delivery.
Washington lawmaker Henry Vollmer of Iowa denounces the national prohibition plan as driven by hysteria and religious fanaticism, likening it to revivals led by critics such as Billy Sunday. He warns of four billion dollars in property loss and condemns coercive tactics while citing German-American property tied to breweries and vineyards.
Berlin dispatch via Telegraaf reports Dr. George Weill, socialist Reichstag member for Metz, who accompanied French leader Jean Tuores when he was shot in Paris, volunteered for service in the French army on August 5. His son Alexander Jr. was wounded in the breast and left hand. the burglar escaped. The family had moved from Washington, D.C. three years earlier. Miss Penelope Alexander, a daughter, aided her wounded brother during the incident. Doctors report young Alexander not seriously hurt.
Russian and German fronts show shifting lines as German columns push east of East Prussia toward Thorn while Russian centers retire and rally near Brura Vistula. Austrian through the Carpathians and Praemyal garrison sorties are noted with British commentary on Joffre orders and imperial stance.
A mass meeting will be held at Cooper Union to organize a citywide push against crime after a recent murder. The Citizens Protective League, backed by civic and business associations and many professionals, arranged the event with broad support pledged.

Washington December 22 President Wilson has taken no stand on pending bills to prohibit arms and war munitions to belligerents in Europe. He told callers he has not expressed any opinion to congressmen and is disinclined to view senate appointment differences as a patronage issue. Administration officials say he will back his nominations despite rejections.
In Janesville Wisconsin a 63 year old manufacturer, named as Rad ar, who faced charges brought by 16 year old Fran Blanchard, ended his life by asphyxiation rather than await arraignment today.
Premier Viviani told the chamber of deputies France will not sheath arms until justice is served and Belgium is restored to full life and independence. He said Prussian militarism must be crushed so Europe can be rebuilt on justice. The session opened amid renewed war focus with deputies pledging patriotism while many members were delayed or held as prisoners by Germany near Lille.
Stock of the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific railway was sold on the New York County Courthouse steps in foreclosure. James N. Wallace bought the collateralized stock for $7,235,200, bid without competition, amid a pending reorganization of the Rock Island system. The bond issue valued at $71.55 million prompted the suit by Central Trust Company of New York. The sale priced stock at $10 per share, par value $100.
