Roy Brown, charged with stealing eleven hogs from Robert B. Brady of Wapello Iowa, was brought back from Canton South Dakota in sheriff Smiths custody. Brady identified the hogs and Brown had previously faced hog theft charges in Louisa County but was acquitted.

Temperance advocates declare the saloon doomed as cards were signed for a petition. Thieves attempted to steal the Des Moines malc petition, but failed to locate the main document.
Edward Douglass White took the oath as chief justice of the United States at 12 08 PM in Washington after Chief Justice Harlan announced the orders of the day. The ceremony marked the first time an associate justice was elevated to the chief seat and the first time a rival party member led the court.
The Chinese imperial senate renewed its push to abolish the grand council and form a constitutional cabinet after the throne rejected a memorial. A resolution was introduced to impeach grand councillors to force the throne to create a constitutional ministry or dissolve the senate.
Detroit, December 19. Francis Kniffen was found dead in bed with his head split open. His wife Nellie Kniffen, awakened by groans, said she found him dying and police later took her into custody. A bloody axe was found in the wood shed.

Alexander B. Winder 64, a Louisa county resident near Wapello, dies after cancer battle. Survived by wife Tabitha and five children: Clara Courtney Homer Winder Ruth Toborg Percy R Winder Hazel Winder. Funeral at Harrison church with interment in Harrison cemetery. Also funeral for Silas Bryant, 68, born Fayette county Ohio, resided in Iowa since age seven. Survived by wife two sons Allen and James Bryant two brothers and two sisters.
Bloodhounds and armed posses scoured Aurora and nearby areas for W. H. Morris of Plano in connection with the Saturday murder of Mrs. Stella Dumas of Pontiac. The trail led to an abandoned barn before being lost, and Fox River was dragged without success.
A man stole $20 in cash and $3 in merchandise from the Andrews dry goods store in Marshalltown Iowa. He phoned for two pairs of ladies silk hose at 1.50 each and had the delivery boy bring $20 to change a bill. The boy counted the money, the door slammed shut, and the suspect escaped through a vacant rear door. officers have not found him.
A large farm home owned by N. A. Lind in Rolfe Iowa was destroyed by fire last night with a loss estimated at $19,000. The family was away at the time and the cause of the blaze remains unknown.
A large mass meeting in the Humboldt library supported forming an Iowa National Guard company. Enthusiasm ran high as a committee was appointed to launch an immediate campaign.
The Interstate Commerce Commission tentatively approves a fixed charge set at 80 percent of the lower berth rate for upper berths in Pullman cars. The change applies nationwide and becomes effective on or before January 20.

A boiler explosion at the New York Central power house on Fiftieth Street and Park Avenue caused two blasts of gas and dynamite, destroying the six story building, injuring about fifty and killing four in a trolley crash. Fire Chief Crocker cites gas then dynamite as causes.
C W Brockman manager of the Family theatre hunted Sunday with friends along the Milwaukee road. He fired, chased the fox for two miles, and finally killed the animal after following blood tracks in the snow. He returned an hour later with the plentiful quarry, elated.
