Billy Sunday reports 1815 converts in Muscatine with expectations of surpassing a thousand more before his Kansas trip. Yesterday’s revival added 284 salvations from three meetings, including 132 men at the afternoon service and 146 who came forward at the evening. Overflows filled seats as organizers prepared extra space at a nearby church.
Mrs Louisa Maria Taft mother of the secretary of war died in Millbury Mass after a July illness and a perilous voyage aboard the harbor tender General Grant where a giant wave caused a near wreck. She survived by four children including Secretary Taft and sons Henry W Taft and Horace D Taft and daughter Fanny L Edwards.
The President sent to the Senate today several nominations: William L. Merry of California as envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary to Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Charles A. Prouty of Vermont for renomination as interstate commerce commissioner. and John Q. Thompson of Kansas as assistant attorney general.
Iowa City scene reports James Stigling aged 10 of Sharon Center thrown from a skittish pony on a church trip home causing fatal neck injuries. His father Marcus Stigling had earlier died from an accidental shotgun discharge. In Marshalltown three Carnall brothers ages 14, 12, and 14 drowned while skating at Tama.
The census bureau bulletin shows this year’s cotton crop ginned by Dec. 1 at 8,339,000 bales, down from 10,028,000 last year and 8,690,000 in 1905.

Senator Tillman introduced a resolution directing the finance committee to investigate the treasury department actions during the financial crisis and to examine the clearing house certificates. The measure appears in two series, each with three subsections, covering treasury operations and certificate issues.
The Supreme Court today sustains a North Dakota statute prohibiting adulteration of white lead and mixed paints. The court also rules that a railroad company cannot be compelled by the state railroad commission to stop its fast mail trains during interstate commerce.
A $300 reward is posted by Sheriff Benham of Muscatine County and County Attorney Pepper for the arrest of Harry Jones, alleged murderer of William Van Winkle and his wife on December 3, 1907. The offer runs 30 days from the date and is in addition to any governor’s rewards.
Description notes Jones as about 5 foot 11, 190 pounds, 45 years old with a smooth face, dimple on chin, scar on right cheek, tattooed left arm of a dancing girl and circle with star, nervous eye twitch, nose sniffing, deep set eyes, military bearing, drinks heavily, last seen without moustache, hair thinning on top, wore dark brown checked suit and corduroy cap, No 8 shoe. He is a sleight of hand performer. Arrest and wire dated December 9, 1907, by Sheriff R. F. Benham of Muscatine Iowa.
Francis B. Hart a Minneapolis attorney asks Governor Johnson to start an inquiry into six years of Minnesota Supreme Court decisions. He cites three cases as examples and argues the court acted illogically illegal and unjust, urging impeachment proceedings.

Somerville, Dec 9 Mrs Emery Huntley confessed at the police station that she killed her two grandchildren Raymond six and Caroline four They were found at her home after being stupefied by illuminating gas and drowned in a bathtub The children were visiting their grandmother and the woman is alleged to be mentally weak
In the international six day bicycle race at New York a terrific sprint in the sixth hour saw Harry Reynolds and James Benyon collide while aiding each other. Both suffered painful injuries and could not continue. Wilcox Lawson Galvin and Jacquelin each lost a lap while Limberg lost two. At eight o clock in the morning the remaining teams had covered 154 miles.
Mrs H H Roberts of New Boston Illinois dies at home at age 75. Survived by one son R H Roberts, a local lumber dealer. Husband preceded her in death about four years ago. Special despatch from New Boston dated December 9.

San Francisco December 9 David F Walker president of California Safe Deposit and Trust company was found speeding south on a Southern Pacific train last night and arrested at Santa Barbara. Assistant District Attorney Henry J Dalzell Brown banker and Walter J Bartnett vice president of Western Pacific Railroad were arrested yesterday in connection with the bank failure.
The Kronprinz Wilhelm reported by wireless from the Red Star line steamer Kreenland that a shaft was broken westward of the Lizard in a heavy gale. The Kreenland sent the message to the Kronprinz Wilhelm through a sister ship Plymouth.
Emperor William of Germany finished the rest cure at High Cliffe Castle and arrived in London for a three day visit. He lunched with King Edward at Buckingham Palace and appeared in splendid health.
The house met for only a few minutes today and adjourned. It will reconvene next Thursday to continue its business.
