Nebraska City, December 9 report a water supply cut off by the Missouri river changing its course. The electric light plant is shut down and all manufacturers may close without relief. Packing houses with independent water systems unaffected. Workers run pipes to the new channel.
Mary A Couch, aged elder stateswoman of Muscatine and the area’s oldest settler, passed away at her home. Funeral plans will be announced by local officials and family.
Mrs. Mary A. Couch died at 12:20 AM on West Third street after a two month illness. She came to Muscatine in 1837 on the first steamboat, witnessed the city’s growth from four houses, and lived 65 years on West Hill. Born 1809, she was married to Moses Couch of Redding Connecticut and kept an Indian trading post on Front street for years.
Mrs. Couch left no close relatives in Muscatine besides a cousin Mrs. Cole and a few nephews and nieces in Chicago and Ohio. An adopted son Ed ward died nine years ago. Her husband Moses Couch died in 1879. For 25 years her faithful companion was Miss Mary A. Hart who lives with her. Funeral is Friday at 2 PM from the West Third Street home.

New York December 9 Cornelius Van derbilt, ill with typhoid fever, is somewhat better this morning though still confined to his home. The condition is described as improved with no immediate danger reported.
Four men die and nine are injured when 56 sticks of dynamite explode at Lehigh and Wilkes Barre No 8 colliery in South Wilkes Barre. The dead are Matthew Phillips James Miglynn Arthur Jones and Robert Amblesby. Cause unknown but may have involved a dropped dynamite box. Half a million dollars in damages reported at the Snook Austin Building area in Atlanta.
Hogs receipts 46 000 with 12 000 leftovers open lower and close strong. Cattle receipts 13 500 down 25 cents. Sheep receipts 20 000 open slow close strong. Car lots show Wheat 61 Corn 336 Oats 190 hogs 40 100. Kansas City and Omaha hogs 17 000 cattle 17 000 Omaha hogs 8 000 cattle 6 800. Northwest Wheat totals Minneapolis 337 Duluth 218 to day 555 last week 1 019 last year 1 019. Liverpool Wheat opened higher with corn and closed higher. Wheat and flour clearances 808 000. corn 120 000. oats 15 000 bushels. Weather mild with snow flurries in some states.
