At the thirtieth annual American Bar Association gathering in Portland Judge Alton B Parker urged fewer laws with stronger standards. He warned against legislative mania and warned of lynch law rhetoric while stressing allegiance to the common law and constitutional aims as essentials of good governance.
A blast of three tons of nitroglycerin at the Dupont Powder works near Sobrante Bay injuries and kills two workers. The explosion causes three buildings to burn and triggers a chaotic evacuation at the Fruit Canneries association plant miles away as Italian laborers panic. The initial shock is felt as workers rush outside, mistaking the tremor for an earthquake, followed by additional blasts.
In Contras France on August 26 an express train from Bordeaux to Paris collided head on with a freight train. Ten people were killed and twenty five injured. None of the dead were Americans. The wreck was caused by a misplaced switch.
Congressman James Kennedy of Ohio endorses President Roosevelt for a third term in a Cleveland statement. He also denounces the Standard Oil company.
J Fr24 Stevens of Ottumwa Iowa sues the Powell estates for 10900 damages in two district court actions after his wife and young daughter perished in a launch disaster on August 1. He accuses W H Powell administrator George Haw Jr and Hallie Powell administrator C O Arnold of criminal negligence for lacking an anchor and other safety gear.
Strikers threaten to cancel leased wire contracts to force Western Union and Postal Telegraph to meet a 15 member arbitration committee. They advocate stopping Western Union clock service and brokerage tickers until settlement. General Secretary Wesley Russell warns the strike may spread unless arbitration talks begin.
A dynamite explosion at the George Sheerer Co. hardware store caused a fire that wrecked three buildings including Bennison Brothers Boston Store. Damage estimated at 150000 with 40000 in stock loss at the Boston store. No injuries reported. Gas leakage from mains suspected as trigger. Cedar Falls Ia Aug 26 Special.
Police officer Edward H. Brink of Kensington station tried to arrest three robbers on the Illinois Central tracks at One Hundred Twenty Third Street early yesterday morning. He was wounded when one of the prisoners fired two shotgun blasts at close range.
Secretary W H Taft arrived in Joplin from Oklahoma City and spoke to a large crowd on trusts and rate legislation. He then addressed Webb City and planned a third speech in Carthage before heading to Springfield.
American Minister Gummere reports from Tangier that Maley Hafid's proclamation as sultan was posted in Morocco City and his acceptance is officially confirmed.
West Liberty Iowa August 26 special report details Mrs George H Ward a wealthy widow and lifelong First Methodist member paying 10500 for complete remodeling of the church. The rededication featured Rev J Wesley Potter as orator with sermons on The Glorious Church and A Strange Paradox. The project added a west side Sunday school wing with seven rooms and a basement kitchen and dining area. Thirty new members joined at vespers as Rev Hanley expressed gratitude.
Two major events captivate officials in St Petersburg the Stoessel trial and the Czar Kaiser meeting. A commission led by General Burzoff has reviewed charges against Stoessel, commander at Port Arthur, and submitted findings to the military supreme court. A death sentence is anticipated.
Levi Orman aged 86 was buried in a rough lumber coffin without any service. Ottumwa, Iowa reports he had lived in Wapello county for over fifty years and died recently. The body was carried to the grave in a wagon in accordance with his wishes.

Morning Sun notes the death of J Charles Trumbull of Allegheny Pennsylvania due to heart disease. Sister Lois Trumbull cared for him at Burlington hospital and the funeral is planned for Wednesday at 2 pm from his parents’ home with interment in Elmwood cemetery.
Sudden death shocks Wapello as little Joe Gauss dies at his grandmother Mrs. Mattie G. Hurley home Sunday about 11 a.m. The funeral is set for Tuesday at 10 a.m. He leaves one sister Hurley and one brother Raymond after both parents died in the last four years.
Reports from Teheran state General Samsam Dowleh and other Persian officials were killed after capture by invading Turks. Claims say Persian villagers including women and children were slaughtered. A separate report notes Turkish occupation of Merivan in Persian Kurdestan.

Separate accident in Portsmouth Ohio kills two railroad workers in a head on collision of Norfolk and Western freight trains. South Bend reports James Oliver the millionaire plow king his condition slightly improved though doctors warn death is near and hours remain. Aug. 26.
New York City Comptroller announced plans to offer 40 million dollars in bonds bearing 4 percent interest at a public sale on September 10. The issue covers long term municipal debt to fund city programs and projects.
Omaha August 26 Higgins Louis Higgins was lynched at Bancroft by about twenty men after being taken from Sheriff Young of Thurston county. He had shot and killed W L Copple and his wife on May 12 near Rosalie following a trivial dispute.
Washington reports indicate President Roosevelt may face strong resistance in the coming Congress over his legislative program including railroad and corporate measures. Key critics include Senator Foraker and Representative McCall, with financiers and other sectors voicing opposition amid tighter money and Wall Street unease. If conditions worsen, passing thePresident's reforms could prove difficult.
