The 77th annual West Liberty fair began under clear skies with signs of a record entry list and heavy livestock and exhibit activity. Judging starts Tuesday across livestock and other departments, with 4-H teams, home project work, and demonstrations planned through Thursday.
Mr and Mrs Albert Parker of Muscatine left to fish in the Mississippi and were missing over 24 hours. Rescued from Geneva Island by a boat crew led by Joe McCormick around 10 30 am they were cold hungry and stiff but otherwise unharmed after about 30 hours marooned by a stiff wind. Sheriff Neser ordered the search as neighbors grew anxious.
Mrs. Henry F. Giessler of Muscatine died at Builevue hospital at 5:35 pm Sunday after a six week illness with complications. Born in Wilton April 10, 1863 she married Henry F Giessler in 1887 and moved to Muscatine in 1901. She was active in First Presbyterian church Red Cross work and Julia Elizabeth Home Association, with two brothers and several nieces and nephews as survivors.
Iowa tax commissioners raised valuations for utility properties by 31.65 percent, boosting 1940 property taxes for power gas and water firms. Major gains include Cedar Rapids based Iowa Electric Light and Power and Eastern Iowa Power, with others such as Iowa Public Service Iowa Southern Utilities and United Power Manufacturing seeing substantial increases. Frank G. Pierce of the League of Iowa Municipalities plans district court review, contending valuations remain too low relative to farm and city property assessments.
Tampa university president John Harvey Sherman testified before the Dies Committee that a German consul general offered to donate books to the university library but the offer was rejected. Baron Edgar Spiegel von And zu Peckelsheim, consul general at New Orleans, described donations as a government practice to encourage German study. The offer followed a call from a man claiming a friend could arrange gifts. the baron later said the donation came from his government, not him, and Sherman learned similar donations were made to other institutions.
Funeral services for a Wells of Carthage resident will be held at 3 30 p m Tuesday at the George M Wittich Funeral Home with Dr David I Berger pastor of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. The body rests at the funeral home with burial in Oak Ridge Cemetery at Wilton.
Wheeler voiced opposition to a third term for President Roosevelt yet believed much of the New Deal era legislation including the WPA and PWA should be kept to avoid a radical party rise in 1944. He cited aid to farmers and other programs as necessary.

Scotty MacDougall called Scoopshovel was crowned king of the hoboes in Britt after dethroning King David I. Thousands cheered as locals and hoboes gathered north of Britt for the ceremony, followed by a parade and a noon slumgullion feed.
Six spectators were injured when a midget racing car crashed into the corner of the bleachers in Laverne Minnesota Sunday night. The most seriously hurt was Russell Bachtell of Sioux Falls with face lacerations and internal injuries. Others include Mr and Mrs Loren Palteer of Sibley Iowa Harvey Heife of Larchwood Iowa Mr and Mrs W C Winans of Sibley Iowa and Kenneth Crabbs of Sioux City Iowa the driver who said the steering gear broke.

Victims identified include Ralph Pryor 55 Dover owner of the boat Miss Ethelyn Cutler Newmarket cousin of Pryor a planter of New Boston Joseph Warnar 23 Newmarket Walter Hargraves 24 Newmarket Clarence P Yeaton 47 Dover Identification was made by Pryor's son Robert who said his father had taken the party on a fishing trip in a small cabin cruiser.

Carl Smuck about 50 was found semi conscious in weeds along railroad tracks near the Roach and Musser factory in South Muscatine. Police say he was struck by an automobile and walked more than a block bleeding before being found. He was taken to Bellevue hospital for treatment.
Seven members of a Lone Tree family were injured when their car driven by Jess Mitchell, 45, collided head on with a car driven by Glenn Given near Marengo Sunday morning. Frances Jean Remelia, seven, was killed. five others in the Given car were injured. The wreck ends a weekend trip for both families.

Annie Budzine, 65, of New Era, died at 4:35 a.m. at her home after a prolonged illness following a stroke four years earlier. Born June 7, 1874, she lived in the same house all her life. Surviving are sister Nellie Budzine and brother Herman Budzine, both of New Era. Funeral services at Fairbanks Chapel at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Burial at Salt Marsh cemetery eight miles east of town.
