Des Moines police report Robert Stevens a 19 year old who nightly steals cars to impress a sweetheart claiming he is wealthy. He was arrested last evening while attempting to take a machine owned by H M Trisler for a country drive.
Clark Dun of Newton Iowa threw his 3 year old son twenty feet to avert a horse kick and was badly injured himself. The hired man found both of them unconscious in the barn. Dun suffered a broken rib in two places and extensive bruising while the boy sustained a bad bruise but no serious injury.
James J. Jeffries will referee the Gans Memsic boxing match, per McCarey. He plans to visit both camps to discuss rules and boost public confidence in the fight.
Bridgeport reports Robert L. Pope is appointed temporary receiver for Pope Manufacturing Co. in Bridgeport. Hartford dispatch notes Pope Co. facing financial difficulties due to inability to negotiate loans.
The Quincy Whig sent a telegram to President Roosevelt urging intervention in the telegraph dispute. The message, about 400 words, asks the president to take action on the issue and sought prompt attention.
Chicago August 14 Judge Landis has postponed the Alton investigation until September 4.
Boise August 14 Clarence Darrow remains in the series with the Western Federation and has not withdrawn from the contest.
Bert Goff confronted a sleeping man in front of his sweetheart's home and a fight ensued. Goff was severely wounded and may die. Frank Gunn was cut in the leg while helping. Olaf Lorenzen is jailed as police decide charges depending on Goff’s condition.
In Des Moines on August 14 Ariulio Screscino was shot by Ortazio Laprochcera, both Italian. Report says Screscino had assaulted Laprochcera’s wife. now locals fear unrest as Italian residents quit work to seek the assailant.
Iowa City native Crawford Morrison aged 75 died in Tacoma Washington after seeking health relief. A pioneer druggist of Iowa City he worked long in Albia, Iowa. He was brother and partner of former Iowa City Mayor William A. Morrison and cousin of Bishop Theodore N. Morrison. A widow and two daughters survive. remains to be buried in Albia.

In Marseilles on August 14 Vere St. Ledger Goold confessed to murdering Emma Levin in Monte Carlo. He described how he killed and dismembered the victim with his wife assisting in packing the remains for transport to Marseilles where they planned to dump the body at sea. Violet Goold also admitted her role claiming Emma provoked the killing over a demand for more money.
Miss Villa Jeremy a Western Union operator who refused to strike was seized by two strikers in Pittsburg on August 14 as she headed to work. They carried her from the stairway into the street and she has not been seen since. Police are investigating and seeking her whereabouts.
New York stocks moved from a dull morning to a sharp afternoon drop with losses of three to seven points in active issues and bigger declines in the special group. Reports of Pope Manufacturing receivership and liquidity concerns in high commercial circles intensified the weakness before a late-day rebound to modest gains.
