Washington officials report a plan to slaughter five million hogs amid a feed shortage. A 1 year processing tax would fund buyups of 4 million young hogs and set price schedules from 25 to 100 pounds. An additional bonus would aid purchase of one million larger hogs.
Chicago criminal court judges responded to crime threats by sentencing 10 more men to state prison, bringing the total offenders sentenced to 66 as part of a 10 day drive to clear dockets. Judge Joseph B. David read a threatening letter and sentenced Lester Brown to one year to life for robbery. Chief Justice John Prystalski said the campaign will continue until dockets are cleaned up.

Des Moines reports debated net income taxation in a second-day public hearing by Iowa legislative tax committees. Dr J W Reynolds outlined a six-factor model: general property tax, personal income tax, business tax, inheritance taxes, targeted taxes on financials and utilities, severance taxes, and a general sales tax. Titus proposed a $1.50 per $1000 mortgage registration fee to avoid double taxation and spur real estate investment, projecting revenue near the prior $600,000 annual estimate.
About 300 Iowa printer publishers are expected in Des Moines for a Friday discussion and vote on the NRA code. The code sets a 40 hour week and minimum wages of 45 cents for men and 30 cents for women, plus the blanket re employment agreement at the Des Moines post office.
Frank Drake of Muscatine was elected commander of the first Iowa American Legion district at a caucus with the state convention in Dubuque. Merchants hope to bring in a government NRA representative to explain requirements and straighten out schedules amid questions about a 67 1 2 hour week and compliance.
Representatives of about 25 000 country grain elevators met in Chicago to draft a code under the agricultural adjustment act. The proposed code sets a 40 hour week, 40 cents an hour minimum, bans unfair practices, and allows overtime during harvest or seasonal peaks. Richard J. O'Connell 55 of Moline, a railroad switchman, died in a Davenport hospital from injuries after he fell between two cars Wednesday night. He died this morning.

New York reports United States Steel Corporation backlog fell by 86 456 tons in July to 2 020 125 tons. June backlog had risen by 176 856 tons, the largest since early 1930. Analysts anticipated a small change with mixed expectations. Over ten years July backlog increases were rare, and last year July tonnage dropped about 68 400 tons.
A. V. Dalrymple retires as director of prohibition with the division of investigation created in the justice department headed by J. Edgar Hoover. William Stanley says the reorganization is complete but details will wait until Attorney General Cummings returns. About 80 agents in Minnesota Iowa North Dakota South Dakota and Nebraska are affected.

George Halling 69 a Sweetland township farmer who lived in Muscatine county died from a heart attack at the William Martz home in Bloomington township at 12 30 a m He was born May 25 1864 in Sweetland township and married Clara Baer Oct 13 1897 at Montpelier He leaves a widow two sons Vernon and Fred a daughter Irma Richter a brother Edward A Halling two sisters Mrs Mary Tunison and Mrs Louise Grey and one grandchild The body is at Hoffman Funeral home and will be moved Friday to the Sweetland township residence for 2 pm Saturday services led by Rev John Haefner Zion Lutheran burial will follow at Harker cemetery.
