Social starved for visits across many towns

A long list of Mt. Vernon area residents and relatives took weekend trips and hosted visitors across Illinois Indiana and Missouri. Families from DuQuoin Harrisburg Sandoval and Plano journeyed to spend time with kin while others traveled to Chicago Evansville and Detroit for holidays and gatherings. Local residents report illness travel and workplace moves plus youth attending university and camp.

Dix Couple Is Wed In Dix Christian Church

Miss Dorris Jeanne May daughter of Mr and Mrs Lonnie May of Dix Ill wed Edwin Leroy Long foster son of Mrs Eva Whitlock Dix Ill in a six oclock June 10 ceremony at the Dix Christian church. Rev O F Whitlock Harrisburg Ill officiated before 175 guests in a greenery lit setting. The bride wore a white suit and Bible bouquet. Attendants included Mrs Dorothy Marie North aqua suit and Mrs Georgia Whitlock beige suit with carnations. The couple will reside in Dix Ill after a Smoky Mountains wedding trip. Guests from several states attended.

The Mt Vernon Shrine No 66 will entertain the Southern Illinois White Shrine Club Tuesday afternoon June 20. Purdue 94th Commencement Honors Regenhardt Engineer

William M. Regenhardt of Mt. Vernon earned a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering at Purdue University’s 94th Commencement Exercises on June 18 in the Hall of Music. For a second year running twin ceremonies were held at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to accommodate the 2300 graduates from engineering and all other schools.

Wm A Blackwood Dies Rites Here

William Allen Blackwood a former Mt Vernon resident died of a heart attack at 5 p m Sunday at his Fulton Kentucky home. He was 58 years, one month and 15 days old. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p m at Corinthian Baptist Church Mt Vernon with Rev W M Fuqua officiating and burial in Bethel Memorial Cemetery. The body will lie in state at Campbell and Parker Funeral Home. Survived by wife Mae, father Anthony Blackwood of Mt Vernon, brother Lawrence Blackwood of Chicago, and sisters Mrs Dora Jones, Mrs Willie Mae Allen and Mrs Bessie Armstrong of Mt Vernon.

June Marriage Announced At Markham City Church

Miss Dorothy Haley, daughter of Mr and Mrs Sam Haley, wed John Donoho Jr son of Mr and Mrs John Donoho Sr of Bluford on Sunday June 4 at two pm in the Church of the Nazarene Markham City. The altar held seasonable flowers. Mildred Halbrooks played the Wedding March and other selections. The bride wore a white street length dress with white accessories and carried a white Bible with white carnations. Mrs Vivian Haley was maid of honor. Wilbur Haley was best man. A reception followed at the bride’s parents home.

Mt. V. Youths to Attend Boys State in Springfield

Two Mt. Vernon youths among 1000 will enroll at the 1950 Premier Boys State at the state fair grounds in Springfield June 25 to July 2 under the American Legion. Donald McCann and Walter Moore from Mt. Vernon high school will join peers from the 23rd district in Vandalia on the Army Duck to Springfield. Premier Boys State is a mythical 49th state for citizenship training under the Illinois American Legion.

Auto hits two parked cars injuring rider in Dahlgren area

A Saturday wreck on South 17th Street left Effie Cook, 79, injured with a knee injury and shock after an automobile driven by Arvil Lowery struck two parked cars. Lowery was arrested and fined $105.40 by Magistrate A M Dulaney for reckless driving.

4 H Club Day Camp Thursday At Mt V Park

Plans are under way for the annual 4 H Club Day Camp at Mt Vernon city park on Thursday June 22. Open to all club members and leaders. Registration 1 00 to 1 30 p m. Activities include softball swimming boating and recreation. A pot luck supper at 6 00 p m. Evening program features vespers and a candle lighting ceremony. Campers should bring supper swim suit ball gloves and wear jeans or overalls.
