Local residents attend events and visits in St Louis and area

Mr and Mrs Earl D Jamison returned from St Louis after attending the Municipal Opera Saturday and visiting friends Sunday. Mrs Margaret Rupinski underwent surgery at Hines Veterans Hospital and is recovering well. Various locals, including the Spillers, Lustigs, Hirons, and Andersons, were seen visiting or traveling between Mt Vernon Waltonville and nearby towns. Several others returned from trips to St Louis and Chicago with family and military assignments noted.

Auction to Pay For Fireworks in Effingham

Associated Press reports Effingham civic clubs plan a porch tour Friday night inviting homes to donate items. Saturday an auction on the courthouse lawn will raise funds to buy fireworks and lights for the Fourth celebration.

Community Chest Meeting Discusses DDT Polio Plan

The Community Chest board and membership meet at 7:30 tonight at the Chamber of Commerce office. They will discuss a proposal to spray DDT in the city and suburbs as a polio preventive measure. Basil Moss serves as chairman.

Julius Chiapelli and Miss Delores Chiapelli married John Julius Jr at St Marys Mt Vernon in a June ceremony. The bride wore lace satin with orange blossom crown and carried white and pink carnations. Indiana Judge Faces Probes In Two Courts

Indiana judge 15 faces investigations by two courts after a fraudulent check and forgery case. He sought a temporary writ to halt the probe. the high court blocked the inquiry last March 22. Garden Club Members Tour Farm Near Harmony Illinois

The Mt. Vernon Garden Club met June 9 at 2 00 p m as guests at the country home of Mr and Mrs Foster McDonald near Harmony Illinois for a conservation tour. The tour highlighted Soil Conservation work and farm labor saving equipment showcased by Mr McDonald who noted the county's fully equipped office in Mt Vernon. The group viewed a pond enclosed by multiflora roses and a modern water system for buildings and animals, saw a tractor with a radio, the first Illinois I A A emblem, and the county’s first electric fence.

Squirrel causes power outage by touching 7200 volt line

DU QUOIN Ill June 13 A lineman says a curious squirrel climbed a transformer and stretched to short circuit a 7200 volt line, causing a rural area power failure northwest of here. The animal was fatally injured in the incident.
