James Earl Ray, known for the King assassination, escapes Brushy Mountain maximum security prison during a staged inmate fight. Born in Missouri, Ray drifted through crime and prison escapes, earning the nickname The Mole. He fled across multiple countries before being captured in London and pled guilty in 1969, later recanting his confession and pursuing appeals for years.
SPRINGFIELD Ill AP Gov James R Thompson seeks fiscal restraint in education and a House Appropriations Committee trims more than 84 million from a 1.390 billion elementary and secondary schools appropriation sending the bill to the full House. The panel cut 30 million from Democrat sponsored requests and 54 million from direct distribution, with two Democrats joining Republicans in the vote.

The Illinois House approved bills to subsidize counties with up to 500 dollars monthly per qualified probation officer on payroll. The measures, backed 107 to 15, move to the Senate. A 2.2 million dollar appropriation funds the program for the last half of fiscal 1978, aiming to establish a statewide probation system.
After five days of searches, officials recovered Domingo Torres, 62, from the rubble of a fire in a West Side Puerto Rican district. He is the third fatality in weekend violence that also claimed Rafael Cruz, 25, and Julio Osorio, 26, both shot to death.
A Springfield Circuit Court jury convicted Lester Aldridge, 29, of murder in the January 1976 slaying of 16 year old Vicki Jo Lenka. Her body was found in a field near Springfield after she had been shot multiple times. Aldridge was arrested five months after the crime. police said he confessed, though he denied being coerced and said he will appeal.
Warren G. Hannula, 37, surrendered to police after a three hour stand-off at his home in McHenry County. He faces aggravated assault, reckless conduct and unlawful use of weapons charges. Neighbors reported shots fired after midnight. deputies said Hannula threatened officers with a rifle but no shots were fired. He was upset over a recent divorce and talked into surrendering.
Belvidere Illinois United Auto Workers Local 1268 announced a tentative contract after a five minute deadline near 6 p.m. CDT Thursday. Workers were sent home Friday as confusion lingered about a possible strike and a ratification vote is planned for Sunday morning at the Chrysler assembly plant producing Plymouths.
Gov James R Thompson moves to curb state plane misuse after patronage chief Michael Dunn admitted asking a pilot to falsify records. Dunn resigned amid flights by Dunn and his wife, with Thompson seeking policy safeguards and reviewing Rosenbloom and Walker era charges. The state will bill Dunn for personal trips, and officials note unpaid sums from Walker era and Howlett.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday at St Mary’s Catholic Church with burial at Hill Cemetery. The deceased Son of George and Biles Spotanski, died April 8 1899 at Barnes Hospital Seaser. Survived by two sons Leopald and George, brothers Capotanski of Ashley and Spotanski of St. Louis, and many relatives including Bobbie Wald Guinan and great grandchildren. Friends may call at home after 5:30 p.m. Monday religious rosary.
An airborne crane with a 60 foot boom toppled while lowering a sick worker from a grain storage area at the Indiana Grain Division complex. Four other men near the scene were injured as the bucket lowered. The incident followed a May 25 fire and explosion at the facility, which has been closed since. Identified victims were not disclosed.
