Indian Camp Survey Near Rend Lake Flood Area
Surface surveying of archaeological sites in the Rend Lake flood region in Jefferson and Franklin counties has resumed under Southern Illinois University led by Melvin Fowler. Graduate student Larry Bowles works part time this spring and will join full time in summer, with about half the proposed survey completed. Nearly 100 sites have been surveyed in two years, yielding villages and temporary camps from Woodland and Archaic periods. A report for the National Park Service, which funds the project, details locations and surface findings to guide excavation.
