Mt Vernon firemen and their snorkel truck received top praise from Carbondale officials for outstanding firefighting at the Old Main building on the SIU campus yesterday. Ten towns sent crews as the aerial platform fought flames from the highest point, though Carbondale’s ladder truck was damaged and underperformed. Chief Sydney Burnette and officers led Mt Vernon responders, which included Ed Harison, Tom Ray, Bob Hall, John Scrivner, and auxiliary Gary Melton. The snorkel truck departed at 8:30 a.m. and returned at 8:30 p.m. This is Old Main’s second fire destruction. the building previously burned in 1883 but was rebuilt as the campus landmark and chief classroom space.

Four automobile crashes occurred on Mt Vernon streets over the weekend. Albert Weerts reported his parked car was hit on Main Street causing over 100 dollars in rear bumper damage Friday night. Gregory Bee's car struck a pole and a no parking sign on North 12th Street Saturday morning with over 100 dollars damage to each. Bee was charged with driving without a license.
