Funeral services for Don Parkinson of Mt. Carmel, husband of former Mt. Vernon resident Clara Nolta, will be held at 1 30 p.m. Sunday. Parkinson died Thursday and burial is in West Salem cemetery at Mt. Vernon.

McLeansboro Community Consolidated School will start cafeteria service on Wednesday January 4 with all equipment installed and tested. Harry Lee Robinson named manager with Alma Audl Geneva Harris and Helen Moser on staff. Pupils from the west side will ride to the East Side dining room for now. Plans call for kitchen facilities at the West Side school soon. Meal prices: students 25 cents teachers and staff 35 cents. In local news McLeansboro Foxes beat Benton 68 to 49 to reach Consolation semi finals at Centralia Holiday tournament.
University of Illinois announces four crippled children clinics in Mt. Vernon in 1956 all at the Masonic Temple on January 12 April 26 July 12 and October 25. Other southern Illinois clinics include Cairo January 19 April 12 July 12 October 11 Anna February 16 September 20 Sparta March 15 DuQuoin May 3 November 15 Chester September 27 and information can be obtained from nursing consultant Grace F Borah 719 Main Street Mt. The Illinois State Museum tested distress calls to deter downtown Springfield starlings. A Minneapolis starling distress recording caused about half to leave briefly, then return within an hour. A second trial reduced departures to 30 percent, but birds returned once the sound stopped. Milton D. Thompson plans a new approach using Springfield starling distress calls.
Belleville city laborers and truck drivers from the International Laborers Union and the Teamsters Union voted to strike on January 16. They seek a retroactive raise of 20.55 per month to last March 1, with current base pay at 279.45 per month. The vote came after the City Council rejected raises for about 160 city employees in street, sewer, garbage, cemetery, and sewage treatment jobs.

Arthur Max Bullock aged 23 of Opdyke was arrested by city police on auto larceny charges. The complaint stemmed from a March incident when he allegedly took a car from Jefferson Motors on Jordan Street. He was turned over to county officers.
West Frankfort Illinois hosts a mass meeting to focus national attention on southern Illinois economic needs. Representative Kenneth Gray says at least 27 public officials will attend, with Ike administration aides Clyde Miller and Alfred L. Rasher from the Commerce Department on hand. Carbondale officials plan to send delegations. the gathering is at West Frankfort High School gym.
The Weather Bureau predicts January will bring below normal temperatures in the eastern third of the United States while areas west of the Mississippi to the Pacific see above normal warmth. Greatest cold departures in the southern Rockies, with near or above rainfall expected in the Southwest and along the West Coast. The rest of the nation should see generally subnormal precipitation.
Mrs Shirley Reichscheid sues Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Co and the store hosting a payphone for 56448 in damages claiming the telephone fell from the wall after she said hello. She alleges a broken nose and 14 days confinement plus other injuries.
A Senate House Economic subcommittee opposed precipitate tax cuts in 1956, warning a rate reduction amid a booming economy could be inflationary. The panel, led by Rep Mills, reviewed hearings with 81 experts. Sen Douglas proposed some readjustment and offsetting loophole closures. Other members include Goldwater and Rep Curtis.
Springfield reports Gov. Stratton pardoned William M. Wright after ruling a $5,000 fine and 1.50 daily rate sentence as unduly harsh. Wright, 30, had been jailed 2½ years of a 4 to 5 year narcotics conviction and was to pay the fine or work it off in Chicago. The pardon ends the balance of the fine and commutes the sentence.
A phony bomb in Christmas wrappings triggered a Times Square scare in New York City. A newsstand operator found a ticking package in a trash bin and alerted police. Traffic and pedestrians were halted as a bomb squad examined a device described as a clock with wires and cardboard tubes.
