Numerous residents and visitors from Mt. Vernon and surrounding towns gather for Christmas holidays. Local soldiers, college students, and families from Bethel Woman's College, Murray State College, and Fort Leonard Wood are noted in town for leave, visits, and holiday games at Benton and Mt. Vernon Rams versus Benton Rangers basketball events.
Vivian Pauline Smith and Jack A. Cox wed in a Dec 9 double ring ceremony at First Baptist Church Mt. Vernon. Miss Smith is daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Smith, Cox son of Earl Cox and Mrs. Dorma Shelton. They will reside at 309 North Weinbach Avenue Evansville.
Walter Damrosch, renowned conductor and composer, died of a heart attack at 88 in his New York home east of Central Park. The longtime head of the New York Symphony Orchestra had left retirement in 1927 to pursue radio work and inspired generations of schoolchildren and music lovers.
Mt Vernon business visitor Mrs Mary Shields spent yesterday in the city from Bruford. Ted Garrison, Miss Shirley Strattan, J B Mayfield and Miss Clive Dell McEfeee attended the Ram Ranger basketball game in Benton last evening. Mr and Mrs Lowell Fellinger of Kirkwood Mo plan to visit his parents A Paul and Mrs Fellinger this evening, while Mrs Jennie Coffey leaves for Denver to spend the holidays with Pvt Norman Lee Coffey stationed at Lowery Field. Pvt Rufus Gow ler Jr of the U S Air Force arrived home today from Cheyenne Wyo to spend a 10 day Christmas leave with his parents and friends. after leave he will go to Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio Tex.
General Walton Walker commander of the Eighth Army is killed when his jeep collides with a truck near Pyongyang after Allied forces reached the North Korean capital. His death follows months of rapid advances and a renewed Red threat as Chinese forces mass on the 38th parallel. MacArthur praises Walker as a brilliant leader, and Lt. Gen. Matthew Ridgeway is named to replace him. Walker, born 1889 in Belton Texas, rose from West Point to lead in World War II and the Korean War.
Mt. Vernon residents Bob Fancher and George Wein Gartner flew to St Louis today while Calvin Williams and Carl Ed Mison traveled to Evansville this morning.
Jefferson Memorial Hospital employees held a Christmas party with gift exchange. Royal Neighbors social club met at Mrs. Clarence Windle's home for the annual dinner attended by 21 members and one guest Mrs. Joy Jones. President Mrs. Lora Kissel opened the meeting with song and prayer, a gift was given to the past president, and Mrs. Joy Jines and others sang carols. Games and prizes followed with committee members named.
The Women s Missionary Society of the First Baptist Church will hold its regular monthly meeting Tuesday December 26 at 2 30 p m in the church. Mrs A T Thompson leads the program. Loyal Women s Class Meets at Central Church of Christ for Christmas Program and Regular Meeting. Marilyn Endicott, home from Lincoln Bible Institute, tells two Christmas stories. Iola Hawkins reads and the group sings carols. Mrs Robert Ruddick Sr attends as guest. Refreshments by Mrs Endicott. Next meeting in February at Mrs Lena Pittman s home.
Pleasant Grove Women’s Society of Christian Service met at Mrs. Earl Smith’s home on Thursday December 21 with 15 members present. Mildred Melton was elected president and led a brief business session followed by a Christmas gift exchange.

Mr and Mrs Carroll Firebaugh Jr of route 2 Mt Vernon welcomed a daughter Anita Jane born at 549 pm yesterday at Good Samaritan hospital weighing 6 lb 10 oz. Mr and Mrs Harold Phelps of route 1 Mt Vernon welcomed a daughter Cindy Marie born at Jefferson Memorial hospital at 8 pm last night weighing 5 lb 13 oz. A son was born to Mr and Mrs W L Mitchell Jr in Lawton Oklahoma Friday evening. Mother is the former Betty Potts, granddaughter of Mr and Mrs C C Potts of this city.

The Ed Meek cleaning firm awarded George Barnes a wrist watch for five years of service. The presentation occurred at Meeks new location 912 S. 10th Street during an employee Christmas party and gift exchange. Barnes began as a truck driver and now works as a finisher in cleaning and pressing.
