Local residents visit Mt Vernon for holidays

Piss June Rucker returns home from the University of Illinois at Champaign for a holiday visit with her parents, while many relatives and friends from Keenes, Bluford, Murray, Champaign, and nearby towns travel to Mt. Vernon for Christmas vacation. Students from Illinois universities and area colleges are listed visiting, shopping, or spending the holidays in Mt. Vernon and St. Louis, with several attending games or returning home between terms.

Federated Womens Club Holiday Lunch Features Charity

Mt. Vernon women held a December luncheon at Bowl Steak House with decor and a $13 free will donation for Marion Veterans Hospital. The meeting included a Christmas program, new member, and blood donor appeals, plus a joint club session with reports and planned gifts.

Mrs Hallowell Visits Grahams In Houston For Holidays

Mrs S N Hallowell of 1907 Broadway travels to Houston Texas to visit her daughter Mrs John Wesley Graham noted voice teacher The Grahams live in The Beaconsfield Hotel They plan holidays in California and Mrs Graham decorates Mt Vernon First Methodist church for Christmas Eve services with poinsettias The family donated a Christ painting and a lighted cross tied to local church history earlier.

Shields Unit Hosts Home Bureau Meeting

This afternoon at 1 o clock the Shields Unit of Home Bureau met at Mrs Maudie Pinkston's home. Miss Anna Betty Huck led the lesson titled Understanding the Grade School Child. A Christmas exchange was held.

First Methodist Choir To Go Caroling After Rehearsal

The First Methodist choir plans caroling after tonight's rehearsal at seven o'clock. The Liberty Club met December 20 at Mrs. Winona Weatherford's home with lunch served and a prayer opening the business meeting. Guests Mrs. Clara Walls and Mrs. Pearl Rose Peech attended and Walls was inducted as a new member. Flowers were sent to Mrs. Weatherford and to ill Mrs. Ethel Bayne. Christmas gifts were exchanged including a purchase for Celestia Fern Fatheree, survivor of a recent fire. The next Liberty Club meeting will be January 17 at Mrs. Edna Pasley's home.

The annual Christmas program will be held at 7 30 o clock this evening at the Wesley Methodist church.

Amvets Auxiliary Hosts Hospital Christmas Party

Amvets Auxiliary Post 4 members visited Marion Veterans Hospital for its annual Christmas party for hospitalized veterans. Harold Stearns and his daughter Patty from Mt. Vernon performed an adagio act, accompanied by Mrs. Louise Drew at the piano. Each veteran received a gabardine jacket and T shirt, with cash donations from participating service groups to fund gifts. The auxiliary also donated tray favors mats and napkins for Christmas Day. Local attendees included Mrs. Anna Kissel Mrs. Jackie Belford Mrs. Wilma Hauk and Mrs. Myra Murray.

Opdyke Couple Celebrates 50th Wedding Anniversary

On Christmas Day December 25 Mr and Mrs George B Thompson of Opdyke will mark their 50th anniversary at home. He turned 74 on November 22 and she will be 69 on Christmas Day. They have eight children 17 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Formerly residents of this city they have lived in Opdyke 12 years. He is a former Jefferson County county clerk.

Hadacol Christmas Party Draws 600 Children at Plaza

Santa in full regalia led the Hadacol Christmas party at Plaza Theatre where over 600 children enjoyed a Buck Jones film and a magic act by Ted Dearinger. Prizes for Hadacol box tops went to Paul Johnson first, Joe Harden second, with many others listed. every child received a gift funded by Senator Dudley LeBlanc of the LeBlanc Corporation.

Emery Wilkey Dies at 59 At Home Here

Emery Wilkey employee of the International Shoe Co. died at 11 45 this morning at his home 2501 Perkins avenue aged 59 years and 15 days. Born December 6 1891 in Franklin county he was married December 30 1920 to Golda Newton. A World War I veteran and longtime Logan Street Baptist Church worker he left a widow a son Linvel a brother H E Wilkey Mt Vernon and a grandson. Funeral arrangements were incomplete.

Clerks Celebrate Christmas Party After Store Fire

About 35 employees of the Mt. Vernon Illinois Brokerage Co. store were hosted at Manager Jack Bennett's Salem Road home for a Christmas party. The group learned all clerks will return to their jobs when the company reopens in new downtown quarters. John Greenberg, president, called from St. Louis to thank staff and firefighters. Greenberg outlined plans for rapid reopening and a large merchandise stock. Gift exchanges were held as the fire had destroyed the store the previous Sunday.

People's Group Meets on Sewer Problem Jan 3

The People's Committee will meet Wednesday night January 3 at Hotel Emmerson. O R Buford, acting chairman, said the group is working on a plan to address Mr Vernon's sewer problems. An 180 page booklet by Warren Van Praag on Danville sewer plans will be explained. Mt Vernon city officials have been invited.

Court House to Close Saturday Christmas Vacations Ahead

Sheriff Roy Taylor announced the county court house will close all day Saturday December 23 as employees begin their Christmas vacations a day early this week.
