Party Recital and Birthday Celebrations at Local Homes

Mrs Leland Hutson hosted a party for Glassman’s Department Store lady employees at 2231 Casey Avenue with a Christmas gift exchange and games. Prizes went to Lucille Arnold and Myrtle Welsh. The Young Homemakers Home Bureau Unit met Thursday afternoon at Mrs. Merle Rogers home. Eleven members attended. Mrs. Doris Atkinson led the regular meeting. Major lesson "Recognizing Good Design in Furniture" was by Mrs. Clara Reeder and minor lesson "Life of the Artist" by Mrs. Atkinson. A Christmas gift exchange occurred. Recreation by Mrs. Reeder. Hopkins Paige Wedding Attended by Families in Dahlgren

Miss Joanna Paige and Kenneth W. Hopkins wed on Thanksgiving Day at the First Baptist church in Dahlgren. The bride wore powder blue with white chrysanthemum accents, two families hosted a reception, and the couple planned a home in St. Louis after a honeymoon. Mrs Paige is a Mt. Vernon high school graduate. Mr Hopkins served in the Coast Guard and studied in St. Louis.

Pumpkin Papers To Be Bared In Red Scare Probe

Whittaker Chambers produced 10 year old papers from a Maryland pumpkin shell and offered others in defense against libel suits. He testified he received papers for relay to Moscow from Alger Hiss and Henry Wadleigh, with Mrs Hiss copying originals on a typewriter. Rep Mundt says a typewriter is a key lead as investigators seek letters from the same machine. The committee’s next meeting is set for Monday at noon.

Finnish Soviet Border Boundary Set, Pravda Reports

The Communist Party newspaper Pravda announced from Moscow that a Finnish Soviet border agreement defining the boundary line and border regulations has been signed in Moscow. The pact formalizes the frontier and related rules between Finland and the Soviet Union.

Flowering Quince Exhibit By Mt Vernon Garden Club

An exhibit of Japonica or Flowering Quince will be shown today and tomorrow in the Welge Paint Store window. Clara Ballweg of 111 N 15th St, Mt. Vernon Garden Club member, grew and forced the bloom. She described soaking, dark room, and sun exposure methods to produce red pink blooms, and noted a white bloom from a separate branch kept cooler. Ballweg said many shrubs and fruit trees can be forced into bloom in winter with regular branch cutting, enabling fresh blooms all winter.

Delay Pamela's Third Operation

Two year old Pamela Lamphere born with her bladder outside her body must wait until spring for her third operation. Surgeon Dr. Harry A Oberhelman cites a gastro intestinal upset as the delay. Pam’s new ailment is not serious and unrelated to the bladder malformation. Parents Fred and Irene were reconciled after a panel of medical experts judged Pamela could survive surgery.

Nine Foot Fireplace Logs Free for Springfield

Springfield residents can have nine foot elm logs for free and delivered. City crews cut hundreds of elm trees and haul them to yards on request to avoid costly transport to the dump. Commissioner Frank Hoke Lock oversees drop offs in backyards.

Three Perish in Indiana Tragedy

In Terre Haute Indiana a mother Mildred Scarbrough 29 and her two sons Larry Eugene 7 and Leonard Wayne 16 months died in a three room cabin fire on the Wabash river levee seven miles from Terre Haute. Father Harold Scarbrough discovered the blaze after returning from work at Commercial Solvents Corp and tried to reach the house but was repelled by flames. Daughters Catherine 11 and Sharon Rose 6 escaped and were found on the car running board. Fire destroyed the home and bodies were found in the bedroom after roof collapse.

Dr RR D Martin Joins Modert Clinic Staff

Dr RR D Martin, a physician in internal medicine and diagnostic work, has joined Modert Clinic. A Chicago Medical School graduate (1933), he trained at Illinois Central Hospital Paducah and Riverside Hospital, Paducah, and practiced in Johnston City before post graduate work in Chicago. He has practiced seven years in Carrolton, is married with three children, and will move his family to Mt Vernon next week. He and his wife are Baptists.

Advise Veterans To File WWII Claims With VA Offices

The American Legion urged inquiring WWII veterans to file claims with nearest Veterans Administration offices to safeguard rights under a July 3 1950 bill creating a War Claims Commission. The commission would pay up to 1 dollar per day for POW camp time and compensate civil servants and contractors taken prisoner in the Pacific once funds are provided. Until named and funded, claims aren’t processed but acknowledged. eventual transfer to the commission is planned.

Over 100 Jobless Claims Reported in Mt Vernon Office

The Mt Vernon office logged 119 new jobless claims for the week ending December 11, including 52 from women. Continued claims totaled 434 people for 674 weeks. readjustment allowance had 16 new and 102 continued for 179 weeks. Deputy Vern Cravens urged workers to discuss eligibility doubts with local claims deputies. If leaving work to farm or pursuing other personal commitments prevents full time work, benefits are not payable.

Gunmen rob Rockford loan office for 500 dollars

In Rockford Illinois three gunmen posing as customers robbed the Viner and Shields Loan Company of 500 dollars yesterday. They forced three employees to empty tills and barred workers in the basement. A genuine customer John Logan waited then left. Police believe a car stolen nearby was used to flee. The robbers escaped as officers arrived. The method matched prior crimes in Lake Geneva Wisconsin and Clinton Illinois.

Palm Springs Calif Dec 11 another earthquake jolted the resort and residents said it was a normal aftershock. Dr Charles Richter of Caltech timed it at 8 12 46 a m CST and called it good sized the tremor followed a larger quake a week earlier and lasted about two seconds with no damage reported.
