Mrs Paul Gardner and others visited St Louis for the day while out of town mourners gathered for A W Akin's funeral. Numerous relatives and friends from California Louisiana Ohio Illinois and Michigan spent time in Mt Vernon for ceremonies travel and visiting relatives.
Virgil T. Bailey, Mt. Vernon broker, won a circuit court injunction halting state action on his broker license suspension until his rehearing motion is decided. The Department of Education and Registration had proposed a six month license suspension after a reviewing committee hearing. Bailey’s late filed rehearing was rejected as untimely. a hearing on accepting the motion is scheduled. Bailey says the injunction shields his licensed real estate business.
Word reached of a son born to Mr and Mrs Vernice Byford of Birmingham Alabama at 2 30 am weighing seven pounds. Former Vernon residents Mr and Mrs Byford are listed. Mr and Mrs John William Book of Fairfield welcomed a daughter Jeanne at Good Samaritan Hospital. A daughter named Margaret Eileen was born to Mr and Mrs Harry Charles Medier of Fairfield at Good Samaritan Hospital this morning.
The Junior Woman's Club held its annual Christmas dinner at Hotel Emmerson with about 100 members and guests. Norma Lee Kelley presided as president with past presidents present. Janet Wood performed and Mrs. Merle Huntington spoke on civic issues and local history. A surprise bridal shower honored Miss Jean McPherson with a jackpot radio prize and gifts. The event featured decorated tables, musical numbers, and tributes to club founders and notable members.
Florence Bond and Eldo Stone both of Mt. Vernon were united in marriage in Morganfield Kentucky on Saturday November 20. They plan to reside in the city.
The Dorcas Class of Wesley Methodist church hosts a Christmas supper and December meeting Friday at six. A fifty cent gift exchange is planned, and attendees should bring a covered dish.
The Fidelia Class of First Baptist plans a Christmas party at Mrs Clarence DeWitt residence on Richview Road Friday at 7 30 p m Mrs Andrew Garraker will lead the devotional services.
The Camp Ground Home Bureau Unit will meet at the home of Mrs Opal Gowler on Fairfield Road at 7 30 p m Tuesday December 14 Mrs Viola Gowler and Mrs Lee Cocke will give the lessons Officers for the coming year will be elected and a Christmas exchange will be held.
The December Edison P T A meeting starts at 7:30 this evening. Rev Ace Summers will speak, and good attendance is urged.
The Mt. Vernon Garden Club will meet at Mrs. Fannie Wallace at 714 Main street at two p m Friday instead of the home of Mrs Ray Blades as previously announced.
Mr and Mrs Elbert Epler of Mt Vernon announce the marriage of their daughter Margaret Ruth to Thomas H Holt son of Mrs Lula B Holt of Pulaski Tennessee The ceremony took place July 3 at the Cumberland Presbyterian church in Nashville with Dr C W Matlock officiating Margaret Ruth attended Martin College Pulaski and worked with the State Department of Education and Registration in Springfield Thomas H Holt attended Vanderbilt University Nashville and is with the Tennessee Valley Authority in Jackson Tennessee
Hostesses Mrs. Lester Shell and Mrs. Wilburn Chapman hosted a December 7 shower for Miss Wilma Haley at 2409 Logan Street. Guests admired orchid and yellow decor, miniature bride on the buffet, and a two-heart umbrella. After games, gifts were opened and refreshments served. The Loyal Homebuilders Bible Class met at 600 Main Street with plans for Christmas donations to St. Louis orphans and Mt. Vernon needy, featuring a play Spending Christmas.
Lloyd Andrew and William Ewald of Rochelle flew to the local field today. Julian D. Hall and J. W. Hodge of Paducah Kentucky flew here today. R. J. Fryer and Mr. and Mrs. Hank Schnieder departed for their home in Dallas Texas this morning.
