St Louis Choral Group to Sing in Mt Vernon Sunday

The Gospel Harmonaires of St Louis will perform two sacred music programs in Mt Vernon on Sunday. At 3 pm they sing at Pavey Chapel C M E church Newby and 12th, and at 8 pm at Cumberland Presbyterian church South 11th and Perkins. The afternoon service marks the Royal Double Quintet anniversary led by Theodell Bacon. the evening concert is a Cumberland Presbyterian church benefit.

Nine Czech clerics convicted as Vatican spies for United States

A Prague state court convicted nine Roman Catholic churchmen including a bishop and two abbots of espionage and high treason in an alleged Vatican plot to overthrow Czechoslovakia's Communist government. Sentences ranged from 10 years to life. Benedictine Abbot Jan Opasek received life and a 100,000 crown fine.

Allen of Paso Robles joins Camp Roberts staff

Gillman C Allen of Paso Robles California is employed as a warehouseman at Camp Roberts California, a large Replacement Training center reopened in the United States Army training program. Allen, son of Mr and Mrs Don Allen of 329 S 4th street, previously spent 3 ½ years in the U S Air Force.

Autos Collide at 11th and Jordan

A car driven by W J Sendelbach and a truck driven by Leslie W Garvin collided at 11th and Jordan streets at 235 p m yesterday. Garvin was fined five dollars and costs before Magistrate A M Dulaney on a charge of failure to have insurance on his truck. A traffic charge was filed against Sendelbach and no disposition had been made this morning.

Mrs Bertich Urges Xmas Aid For Needy Germans

In Mt Vernon and Jefferson county residents are asked to send gifts to Major Joseph J. Lummel in Nurenburg for German children. Clothing is especially needed while soldiers provide candy and toys. Packages go to Major Lummel or to Mrs Bertich who will forward them at her expense.

Allied forces retreating to the south w ere reported with evacuation plans for about 1 500 North Koreans including Pyongyang officials. Red forces massed east of Songchon toward Wonsan as U N troops faced traps around Changjin reservoir and heavy air actions claimed 3 800 enemy kills in the northwest. Mt Vernon experienced a highly fluctuating November with extreme temperatures from 82 degrees to one degree below zero. The month featured rain on seven days totaling 3.96 inches, with 17 days below freezing and a big mid month freeze followed by a warm stretch and later a return to cooler late fall conditions.

Maulding regional supervisor of the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation is named a delegate to the Mid Century White House Conference on Children and Youth in Washington D C. William A Shirley Dies at Nashville Illinois

William Arthur Shirley aged 72 and longtime L and N Railroad employee died suddenly of a heart attack at his Nashville Illinois home. Judge Walker to Go Deer Hunting in Pennsylvania

Judge Frank H. Walker, ending his Jefferson County judgeship Sunday, plans a Washington trip for business and pleasure before joining the state legislature in January. Acquit Former State Official Of Collusion

CHICAGO December 2 C J Gene De Govela acquitted of one charge tied to a $10116 kickback on a state contract still faces trial on another. A criminal court jury acquitted the former state superintendent of exhibits of collusion though a charge remains he violated the state officers act by taking a secret rebate on three mobile trailers bought for $67439 in 1947. The trailers, used to haul state exhibits to fairs, were purchased from Mercantile Displays Inc of Chicago which prosecutors say rebated $10116 to Lincoln Advertising Agency of Springfield. The defense says there was no secret deal. former Illinois governor Dwight Green testified he authorized the purchase.

Man Held Here On Theft Charge

Marvin Jackson a 30 year old city resident is held on a larceny charge for allegedly stealing copper wire from Dewzer Electric Co where he worked. Authorities say the wire was sold at Cage s junk yard. Jackson appeared before Magistrate A M Dulaney yesterday afternoon. Bond set at 1500 with a preliminary hearing scheduled for December.
