Weekend Visits Span City To Far Flung States

Local residents and relatives filled a wide circular of visits from West Frankfort to St Louis and Des Moines. Many people traveled to fairs, family weddings, and church gatherings while others returned from trips to Pennsylvania Maryland Texas and Illinois towns including Benton Belleville Champaign and Mt Vernon.

The Gleaners class of Park Avenue Baptist Church meets Tuesday night at 7:30 for its monthly social in the church basement. Members will elect a teacher for the coming year and visitors are welcome.

Dorcas class members of Logan Street Baptist Church and their families meet at the north end of the city park Tuesday at 6 30 PM for a picnic. Each family brings fried chicken or meat loaf and sides plus own table service.

First Stewart Reunion Held At City Park

The first Stewart Reunion gathered 42 people on Sunday at the city park for a basket dinner. Out-of-town guests included M. E. Stewart and others from Clinton, Kenney, Benson, Marion, and more. The 1951 reunion is planned for the last Sunday in July at Pana Park.

Mary Joe Ruffin Weds Harald W Gregory In Peoria Honeymoon

Miss Mary Joe Ruffin daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bond Ruffin married Harald W. Gregory at Park Avenue Baptist Church on Saturday July 29. Rev. Partridge officiated. The bride wore white organdy and satin with a halo veil. bridesmaids wore pink and blue organdy. A reception followed and the couple departed for a two week northern state honeymoon. They will reside in Peoria where Gregory is employed by Caterpillar.

Hank Williams to Play at Mt Vernon Drive-In

Hank Williams, famed for Lovesick Blues, will appear at the Mt Vernon Drive-In Theatre on Wednesday August 9 with the Drifting Cowboy Band. Williams is billed as the leading radio and recording folk artist in America and joined the WSM Grand Ole Opry in June 1949 after early radio work in Alabama and Louisiana.

35 Cabbages on One Stalk Reported in Garden

Mrs Hobart Elder of 1217 South 15th Street reports 35 heads of cabbage growing on a single stalk in her garden. Other stalks in the Elder plot bear only one head each and the unusual yield has drawn curious attention from neighbors.

Airport news notes several residents traveling by air. S. E. Carnahan and Pat Holt from this city flew to Columbus, Ga. A. W. Ray flew to Mt. Carmel. Bill Deaton of West Frankfort, Ben Holtkamp of Centralia, and Jack Ganet of Mattoon also flew to the local field today. E. F. Peters of St. Louis visited his parents, Dr. and Mrs. A. J.
