A letter from Camp Taylor Kentucky dated May 30 1918 describes Sgt Dodd duties with four to six squads of eight men each, corporal supervision of seven men, daily drill for six hours, and supervising 32 to 48 men. He declined a Signal Corps post and says 200 men monthly are trained for overseas duty while noting public wakefulness to the war effort.
A veteran letter writer recalls recruit experiences at the camp beginning with arrival at 10 p.m. and processing in the mill. He describes pay and insurance setup, billet assignment, chow, bedding, inoculations, and a 36 hour break, ending with a boast of camp camaraderie and sentiment for home folks. The letter also calls out local reporting errors about Red Cross contributions and lists community updates from Brodhead including relocations, visits, medical updates, and a few travel notes.
An old health note explains constipation stems from dehydrated stools. It recommends drinking water, eating raw fruit, and outdoor exercise to improve digestion, then suggests mild laxatives like Chamberlain's Tablets as a safe option until relief occurs.
