The Adven issue announces a Baptist Church Bible Institute with two sessions led by Dr Beacham and Dr Sacham and Paul Powell of Louisville. Classes start 6 30 p m and lectures at 8 p m each evening, free to all attendees at the church.
Captain H Benton Kinsolving of Company H First Kentucky Regiment visited the city for recruitment duties but was recalled as the unit reached war strength. Locals praise his record and predict he will lead loyally. He expects the regiment to enter National service within 30 days and train in France by fall.
During a recent storm, lightning struck the house of Mrs. Mary C. Schlegel, starting a fire that was soon extinguished by rain. Residents report only slight damage and no injuries, and friends are relieved by the outcome.
Mr. Geo W McCormick aged 76 a noted Eastern Kentucky real estate trader died at his Harrison Avenue home from a complication of diseases. He leaves a widow and children including Judge G Allen McCormick J Thomas McCormick and Mrs Clay G Fogg of this county. S Fred McCormick of Lexington Ky. Mrs Lawrence Gillaspie Clark County. Mrs W E Sledd and Mrs James Gillaspie Columbus Miss. Mrs N J Brown Grand Junction Colo. Chas C McCormick Aurora Mo. Interment is at Machpelah Cemetery this afternoon at 2:00. The community extends sympathy.
William Randal son of Mrs Sophia Randal has joined the U S Navy for a second enlistment. He previously served years ago and since then worked at a Cincinnati Ohio company plant. Local friends will follow his naval career with interest.
Circuit Judge William A. Young adjourned the circuit court last Wednesday with plans to resume tomorrow. The Grand Jury will assemble again while the Petit Jury was dismissed. only judge-alone cases will be heard upon reopening.
The Lexington Leader praised Mrs. John W. Burbridge of this city for her singing at a recent Lexington musical. A finished musician, she is well known to Central Kentucky music lovers.
The 1917 18 faculty includes Frank A. MacNeill of Winchester Duke Young of Nicholas county Mrs Ben R Turner of this city and Miss Bertha Baehr of Cincinnati.
Mr and Mrs William Huls lease Olympian Springs and plan a grand opening June 17 with an opening ball on the 20th. The resort, famed for tennis, mineral baths, bowling, dancing and amusements, invites guests from Montgomery and nearby counties to spend their vacation there.
Dennis Guilfoile, a former resident who moved to Mason County six to eight years ago, died last Wednesday in a Maysville hospital from hardening of the arteries. He leaves a wife, three brothers Neal James and William Guilfoile all of this city, four sisters Mrs James Peters and Mrs Mike Peters of Irvine, Mrs James Gallagher of Covington and Sister Mary Asumpta of Owensboro.
Directors of the Montgomery County Fair Association met last week to set the contract for the fair catalog. The event promises interest with splendid purses for horse races attracting trotters and pacers, aiming to make this year’s fair the biggest yet.
Policeman Jesse Flora arrested Lloyd Reid of Carlisle last Wednesday night for stealing whisky in local option territory. At trial before Judge Turner Reid was fined 60 dollars and sentenced to 10 days in jail. Bootleggers face strict enforcement as officers remain vigilant and have few escapes.
Mr. G. B. Senff and his son Earl King will perform in an amateur minstrel show staged by the Winchester Lodge of Elks in Winchester Friday and Saturday night this week.
Joe W. Branham joined the U S Navy during a Lexington recruiting party visit. He was the sole enlistment after several applicants were rejected for physical reasons.
The graduation exercises drew large crowds as Prof. McHenry Rhoads praised the High School graduates. Awards include Valedictorian Carroll Chenault Jr 95.6, Second Miss Lula Elam 94.5, First English Anna B Pinney, and multiple grade honors and attendance prizes across grades one through eight.
Miss Nellie Guilfoile and Mr. Amos Davis Turley received a marriage license Monday and were married at nine by Rev. Father E. B. Rohrer. After a short bridal trip they will live on Mr. Turley’s farm on the Camargo pike, as friends extend best wishes for happiness.
John Thomas was arrested by Chief Tipton and jailed on charges of stealing brass fittings from pumps and engine at the Co. & O. R. R. pumping station. He was bound over to the grand jury, which indicted him for grand larceny.
Trotters and pacers in training at the local track are reported doing very well. Officials expect many to be ready to win money when the races begin.

Mrs. J. O. Tyler’s Rhode Island Red in Montgomery County has laid 101 eggs in 115 days with two eggs in one day, one hard and one soft. The hen, given as a Christmas gift and fed scraps like ordinary poultry, continues laying, threatening Lady Walnut Hall’s famed egg count.
Mayor C. K. Oldham acting under city council orders has served notice on the Carey Reed Co of Lexington and on the bonding company demanding completion of stalled street work. The project has been delayed for months and residents grow increasingly anxious for completion.

The Mt Sterling High School Alumni Association held its annual meeting and banquet at Ringo's Hall with over 100 members in attendance. The Class of 1908 organized the program, and Flo Shirley was elected President, Frank M. Wyatt Vice President, and Stewart Sharp Secretary Treasurer. The event boosted school spirit and called for more frequent gatherings.
A nationwide effort urges bells in churches and public buildings to toll at nine each night for three then two then one stroke to remind the public of duty to Liberty Loan Bonds. A noon explosion at O W Potts machine shop on Maysville street involved a welding tank. No injuries reported though several windows were broken, notably at the house recently vacated by Dr and Mrs P K McKenna.
