Miss Margaret Gibbons, 20, dies when the car she rides in is struck by a freight train during a picnic trip near Lockland Ohio. One other girl is killed, another seriously injured and a third slightly injured. Gibbons was born locally, daughter of Tom Gibbons who once lived in this county. News reached relatives Monday morning.
The State Council of Defense extends into Montgomery County with a structured committee system including Labor, Industry, Finance, Military Affairs, Publicity, Agriculture, Public Safety, Education, Health and Public Safety chairs. Its aim is to guard state interests and report treasonable acts to support the war effort.
Five thousand whites will depart Kentucky for Camp Zachary Taylor between June 25 and 29, with 16 from this county yet to be chosen. From June 19 to 24, 2,000 black registrants head to Camp Taylor, Montgomery county contributing 13. In total 240,000 men join the call, lifting the national draft to 1,595,704 and signaling an army in camp over two million. After July 1 the local board must push nonessential workers into essential roles or face induction, with time allowed for changes. Miss Mary Elizabeth Taul and Breckenridge Horton married at the Taul home, with Rev. Southgate officiating, and will reside in this city after a brief honeymoon in Cincinnati and nearby locales.
