Mrs T S Robertson of Bethel died Friday morning after a long illness at seven o'clock. She was a Christian church member since childhood and known for kindly ministrations. Survived by husband two sons Scott and Harold and daughter Lila Ruth with many relatives. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon.
Arrangements are underway for the Boys Annual Declamatory Contest to be held in the High School Auditorium on March 1. Six contestants will compete, three from each society Cavein and Halleck, with a first prize of ten dollars and a second prize of two dollars and a half. The event is expected to be one of the warmest and most interesting school gatherings.
A Sunday morning blaze in the Traders National Bank building basement damaged the barber shop owned by G B Turner and spread risk to nearby offices. Losses include 600 for the barber shop, 5 000 to 6 000 for the building, 3 000 to 4 000 for fixtures, and a total estimated damage of around 10 000 with insurance partial coverage. The old Farmers National Bank building has been leased and business resumed there.
Reports claimed Seth Botts joined troops to France but his parents confirm he remains stationed at Camp Forrest Georgia near the Tennessee line. War Department says no definite date for a second draft yet factors point to April or May with preparations already underway.
Numerous farm sales reported along Grassy Pike and Levee area. W E Little sold Emerald Chief Stock Farm at 232.23 per acre to T J Ratliff of Bath county. Kufas Hadden sold Levee area land to Robert Combs for 1700 and Bowen place 32 acres to Fred Rushford for 5250. Clayton Ramsey sold McClure place 102 acres to Luther Mason at 135 per acre. W W Quicksall sold unimproved 5544 acre on Grassy Lick Pike to A B Pieratt & Sons for 12000. Much land is overflow bottom and rich. Demand for farms is high with limited rental land.
Miss Margaret Frost a community nurse in this city who has joined the Barrow Hospital Unit will likely be called for service soon as the enlisted men begin training. The Red Cross ladies shipped 2 500 gauze sponges after ordering. A total of 3 603 bandages were made and shipped this month. Also, notices include a livery sale with high bids, a new stenography class to start March 1, and property sales in Sterling Kentucky with bids and auctions announced for March 2 1918.
A large crowd gathered at the depot to bid farewell to Montgomery and Menefee county soldiers bound for Camp Taylor. Local officials led the sendoff, Rev Clyde Darsie spoke, and comfort bags and kits were distributed by the Council of National Defense and Red Cross.
Everett Earp a photographer formerly of this city wed Florence Ummerville of Huntington West Virginia in New York City. Earp studies military cinematography at Columbia University after enlisting six months ago. The bride is described as beautiful and popular and friends here extend hearty congratulations.
Real estate agent T Foster Rogers states that a 10 acre tract with improvements owned by R A Berry on the Paris pike was sold to Mr George Carter. Possession is planned for about March 10 when Carter will move onto the property. The notice includes an unrelated sales plug from The Walsh Co. selling boys suits.
Washington report falsely claimed Roger Baker of Montgomery County was found among Tuscania victims on an island with seven others. The Mt. Sterling Advocate notes no discovery has been reported and Baker is believed still missing, as telegram from War Department confirms.
John McCormick sells half of his clothing hat and furnishing business to Charles K. Oldham. The new firm named McCormick and Oldham plans stock expansion and aims to please customers. Oldham brings years of merchandizing experience and wide local acquaintance.
Warren Hatton, longtime Cumberland Telephone and Telegraph manager, resigns to move to Ledford farm on March 1. He plans to split time with oil lands in Eastern Kentucky. no successor named yet.
Real estate agent sold the modern residence of Mr A G Ratliff on West High street to Mr S W Evans of Bethlehem Bath county. Possession to be given about March 15 and Mr Evans plans to move with his family to the property.
Allen G. Prewitt has sold his Clay street home to Mrs James Tl Henry for 3350 dollars. Possession will be given April 1. Also notice: Wanted an incubator from low to 200 eggs by Perry Flora.
A telegram reports relief from the car shortage within 72 hours after talks between local officials and Chesapeake & Ohio Railway executives. Senator Beckham Congressman Fields and Commissioner McChord aided, with Earl W. Senff and County officials pursuing action in Washington. Tobacco warehouses face congestion with over one thousand hogsheads ready for shipment and at least 100 cars needed to clear the backlog.
