The city, led by Mayor W Reid McKee, announces a week long cleanup beginning Monday April 28 through May 3. Trash and rubbish will be collected at the curb at no cost, with officials inspecting sanitary conditions afterward and prosecutions expected for noncompliance. Women’s clubs coordinate with authorities to assist in the effort.
The Cumberland Telephone and Telegraph Company raises monthly charges starting May 1. Business and office lines go from 2.50 to 3.50, city residences from 1.50 to 2.00, party line cheaper. Country rates set at 1.25 base, 20c per half mile to city limits, 30c per half mile beyond five miles. William Randal spoke to the Woman's History Club on a recent meeting, delivering an interesting address.
In a Sunday message from Washington, Attorney General Palmer announced that enforcement of wartime prohibition beginning July 1 will fall to the Department of Justice. He said it is his duty to prosecute violators and that he cannot grant amnesty to any brewer pending further interpretation of alcohol limits.
D W Griffiths Hearts of the World comes to Table Theatre on May 7 with two showings at 2 10 pm and 8 10 pm. It is billed as a sweet love story set during war with a special orchestra and described as Griffiths greatest triumph surpassing Birth of a Nation.
The State Y M C A Managing Board announces a two day conference at the Presbyterian church this Thursday and Friday. Speakers include Dr. W A Ganfield Danville Hon H V McChesney Frankfort and Hon L F Zetfoss Ashland. Sessions begin Thursday May 2 at 7 30 p m and Friday 9 30 a m with a school visit and another 7 30 p m gathering. All are invited.
Mr. W. C. Potts of Paris heads the Parboken Oil Company with offices here. The Bourbon News clipping notes 500,000 shares at $1 par, 50c limited stock, leases in Lee Owsley Estill counties, and a strong local board predicting rapid growth. Prof. Bruce Reynolds returns to Lexington to join a picture house after leaving Barrow Unit.
The Bradford Oil and Gas Co struck its second Apperson lease well near the Court House with a output estimate between 10 and 20 barrels. Sand was struck a little over 300 feet deep and the well will be shot and pumped with the first. Drillers on the Crooks lease reach just over 800 feet with no oil show yet, the deepest sunk in the county, awaiting a possible test to 2,500 feet.
Lt. Harry W. Lockridge has landed at Newport News from France and will visit home soon. Friends here are glad to learn of his safe return.
The Montgomery county Victory Loan drive oversubscribed its quota of 279100 dollars with minimal soliciting. Officials praise the county as loyal and liberty loving, noting exceptional community effort across all five drives.
Lt. Charles Shaw and Sgt. James Lynch of the 29th Area Squadron arrived from Camp Knox to perform at Woodford's farm near Mt. Sterling. The pilot flew Lexington to Mt. Sterling in 12 minutes, climbed to 7000 feet, then coasted 14 miles past Winchester before landing. A large crowd asked questions about the flying machine as Hoffman Eastin Strother joined in on additional flights.
Mt Sterling High School was defeated by Owingsville High School in a Friday afternoon game at Hortons Park. Owingsville controlled the action with nine runs to Mt Sterling's six, signaling a need for improved offense and pitching in the next matchup.
The Flying Circus of four allied aces did not arrive as announced and is about two days late due to accidents and weather. Liberty Loan officials will announce the new time. The visit includes public flights, a court house address by Hon. Jouett Shouse, and a luncheon in his honor.
The Price of Peace shown all Sunday afternoon at the Table Theatre drew immense crowds with the house packed. The film was realistic and enjoyable and no admission fee was charged. Manager Small facilitated an engaging matinee for all attendees.
The W C T U will meet Thursday afternoon at 3 o clock in the Rest Room. Members are asked to bring a new member to the gathering.
