Illinois House approved a constitutional convention bill 156 to 3 sending it to the Senate. Delegates would be elected Sept. 23 with pay of 1000 dollars monthly for up to nine months, the president 1500 and the vice president 1200.
Mount Prospect residents vote tomorrow in Districts 57 59 and 214 along with Harper Junior College board and township trustees in Wheeling and Elk Grove. River Trails District 26 voters also choose directors at River Trails Junior High School 1000 Wolf Road with five candidates Wattenberg Zuck Haney Hilfman Halvorsen three seats three year terms. Incumbents Haney Hilfman and Halvorsen seek re election.
Voters in School District 59 choose three members from seven candidates for full terms and one unopposed candidate for a one year seat. Polls open noon to 7 p.m. at nine locations including Clearmont and Rupley Schools. Precincts 1 through 9 detailed with boundaries. call HE 7-1000 for polling info or results after 10 p.m.
Edith Freund reports a growing regional trend of antique and junk hunting in the Northwest suburbs. Families hunt for “accent pieces” in auctions and resale shops from Indiana to Wisconsin, with dealers and shops like Mount Prospect Hardware and Barrel O’ Bygones noted for history tags and varied inventories.
Transportation Secretary John Volpe said a financing plan should reach the President and the Bureau of the Budget in two to three weeks. He favored a trust fund for the system, possibly funded by automobile excise taxes and perhaps part of the cigarette tax.
State Labor Director Barney J. Grabiec notes Illinois unemployment benefits fell 8 percent to 55 681 in the week ending April 1 due to renewed construction work. Claims are down 17 percent from the same period last year and reflect improved job activity.
Three Republican senators left a tour of Alaska arguing that Senator Edward M Kennedy used the trip for a publicity stunt. A memo from a subcommittee staffer reportedly guided Kennedy on maximizing TV news coverage during the trip.
Harper Junior College trustees last night reviewed two campus conduct statements one by students and one by their attorney The student policy bans on campus gambling theft drug use alcohol and lewd or obscene conduct The attorney drafted policy bans all picketing protesting rallies or literature distribution defining disruptive behavior as interfering with college operations Prohibited items include unauthorized occupancy of buildings interference with rights of students and officials traffic disruption and leaflets by unaffiliated persons The board justified limits on appearances by guest speakers to real threats to campus order.
Harper Junior College officials praised board member John Kuranz for hard work on an Northwest industrial advisory council during the ongoing election campaign. Minutes from the council meeting on March 11 were distributed to members.
