Fire crews under Charles Baumgarten fought spreading blazes in Gower Fremont and Broomfield townships. Flames in Chippewa burned late as crews ploughed furrows to halt spread and deep marshland fires resisted stamp-out efforts despite efforts to isolate roads and remove fuel. No oil wells were endangered.
Oliver Riggle, 20, of Deerfield Township, was arrested and arraigned in circuit court after a July turkey theft from Clare Smith's farm. He pleaded guilty to the charge, but Justice Wardrop deferred sentence. Riggle admits taking the turkey for a feed.
Governor Green capped his pre election radio campaign with WJR remarks denouncing former Governor Groesbeck over securities approvals and parole records. He touted Attorney General Wilber M. Brucker as a model public servant and urged Michigan voters to consider his leadership.

Mt Clemens Sept 6 The Mt Clemens Leader reports that if Alex Groesbeck becomes governor he will order Gratiot avenue widened from Detroit city limits through Macomb county with state funding. The plan calls for Gratiot to reach about 100 feet and the state would cover costs through East Detroit Roseville and Mt Clemens.
Fred Beals a communist organizer fled to Russia to escape a second degree murder charge tied to the Gastonia Police Chief murder during the Gastonia Textile riots. Prosecutor Norman Orr said Beals had been free on a $20 000 bail in Gastonia and secured release on $10 000 bond after his arrest on criminal syndicalism charges.
Atty Gen Wilber Brucker and Alex Groesbeck race for governor remains tight as final campaigning ends. Reports from Lansing indicate no sweeping margins, with Green’s revival sharpening Groesbeck’s attack and potential grand jury probes that likely won’t materialize.
United States minister Charles B. Curtis reports Santo Domingo wrecked by a hurricane with an estimated 1,506 dead and 5,000 injured. The city is under martial law as President Trujillo directs relief. deaths are being burned, with no reported American or European fatalities.
Ida M. Haskins has been chosen as instructor in health education at Central State Teachers College under the Michigan children’s fund provisions. Her background includes study at Oberlin and several universities and prior roles in health and physical education in Akron YWCA, Elgin public schools, Detroit hygiene, and Mansfield public schools. United relief ships reach Santo Domingo as survivors struggle with hunger and 2000 dead after the capital’s devastation. The US Catherine with two other supply ships had difficulty communicating from San Juan due to high river waters, delaying cargo receipt.
U.S. Marine planes from Port Au Prince delivered medical supplies and tents to Santo Domingo as authorities counted about 2 000 dead and 6 000 wounded. Five ships and overland convoys from Haiti were en route but debris blocked harbor access and damaged roads slowed relief efforts. Detroit September 6. The 22 man grand jury resumes investigations Monday with Fred Tara, a key witness in police efforts to link Ted Pizzino to the Buckley killing. Pizzino, held in New York, fights extradition as indictments name two Chicago Detroit racketeers in the Buckley case. Mayors Bowles and inspector Garvin may also testify.
Father Joli Hagen, the Vatican's only American-born citizen, died after a brief illness. He led the pontifical observatory for years and enjoyed studying the skies, often seen walking to the observatory in the evenings.
Paul Schirnus a 38 year old Ford worker of Dearborn withdrew 2500 dollars from a Michigan Avenue bank after two strangers offered to let him buy a 12000 dollar house for 2500. He handed over the money then was sent to buy a cigar while the pair vanished. Police seek the swindlers based on Schirnus description. He earned the money over 16 years, has a wife and three children.
Mrs. Joseph Carey reported a traveling bag lost from her car during a northbound vacation trip between Mt. Pleasant and Harrison. She notified the DAILY TIMES after discovering the loss in Harrison and placed a classified ad. The bag was turned in to the DAILY TIMES office the following day.
The Mt. Pleasant Daily Times will provide all night coverage for the Michigan primary with an extra edition to be printed Wednesday morning. The office opens 7 p.m. Tuesday and maintains continuous news via United Press Association and township returns. Two telephones will be used to speed access to the latest counts.
Detroit selection names Mildred Hart 16 from Mackinaw county as healthiest girl and Francy Hayes 15 from near New Hudson as healthiest boy among 30 000 4 H club members at the state fair. They will represent Michigan at Chicago on December 1 for national honors.

Scott No. 1, Pure Oil in Greendale township, yielded 150 barrels in 12 hours and indicated a 350 barrel daily rate. Total producers rise to 170 with potential production between 7 000 and 10 000 barrels daily. Wesche No. 2 in Leaton was nearing completion with Chartiers Oil likely to reach production within 24 hours.
