Michigan officials warn of extreme fire danger across forests and farmland as drought persists. 400 trained personnel plus volunteers are patrolling to deter outbreaks, with fires threatening homes, barns, and crops until significant rainfall arrives.
A brush fire, likely started by campers or fishermen, burned about 500 acres twelve miles north of Clare for two days before being stopped. Lansing reports farmers sacrificing for sport as drought nears an all-time Michigan record. The 1927 drought was the worst, with no rain from July 23 to September 7. Intensive raids by Pontiac police and sheriff liquor squads have shut down most blind pigs. Officers hit as many as 12 locations in a day, producing numerous arrests as operators concede the business is too hot to run.
The car driven by J A Simpson of Mt Pleasant Isabella county drain commissioner ran down an 80 foot embankment and crashed into Budd Lake at Wilson State Park. Passengers were not present. bystanders hauled the vehicle from the water with a rope. The car was badly slummed and the incident drew many tourists and picnickers.
Petoskey hosts a pair of farmer meetings next Thursday with A H Jefferson from Michigan State College to show proper potato storage. A model storage house will be used and a farm crops extension staffer will assist, with morning at Petoskey Produce and evening at Levering ICCF hall.

Lieut Jimmy Doolittle joined the Caterpillar club after a wing of his army pursuit plane crumpled in the air during the National Air Races in Cleveland Ohio He later flew another plane and performed stunts amid a ground crash remains the first mount spun to a field near Olmstead Falls causing only a hand scratch.
A Sunday apartment fire in Winnipeg killed eight people including women and children. Ten others were injured two seriously as flames from the basement swept upper floors and parts of the roof collapsed. Victims named include Madge Edwards 42 her daughter Marjorie 14 son Gordon 9 Alfred Applebee 45 daughter Irene 11 Ralph Weilzhton 56 and Mrs H L Butler and Mrs Sarah E Gaunt 68.
San Francisco September 2 A maritime disaster inquiry runs through the weekend after the liner San Juan was rammed by the tanker B C T Dodd. At least 71 lives are lost and investigators seek how many were aboard and why signals were misunderstood.
International President John L. Lewis of the United Mine Workers praises Labor Day and notes coal industry depression requiring federal regulation. He highlights union loyalty, nonpartisan politics, rising organizing in 600 cities, and a decline in strikes from 1916 to 1928 with growing collective bargaining and wage gains.
National Radio Audition Headquarters announces a local audition at Central State Teachers College Mt Pleasant Michigan chaired by J Harold Powers. Open to non professional singers ages 18 to 25 on September 12 at 3 00 p m.
