Belgrade reports renewed anti Italian riots with casualties across the nation. Sixty wounded and two killed in Belgrade area. seventy students and 48 laborers arrested in local rioting. Government debates compensation demand from Italy and cabinet holds special session.
Marshall Michigan May 31 a car carrying four people was struck by a Michigan Cultural Accommodation train at a rural crossing two miles southeast of Hore. Victims include Carl Pattengill 55 his wife Gigh Pattengill 51 James Gorsline 42 and his wife Margaret 89 all residents of Battle Creek.
Rome reports the Vatican aglow as Pope Pius XI, in the seventh year of his pontificate, is awakened to begin his 71st birthday with Mass in his private chapel followed by a second Mass conducted by a papal chaplain.
Prospects of a series of big mergers in the automobile industry focused attention on the New York Stock Exchange. Chrysler and Dodge shares fell after their consolidation, seen as a forerunner of mergers to create firms as large as General Motors or Ford. Confidential reports said a merger to include Jordan, Reo and Pierce Arrow is underway, with Jordan and Reo stock reaching new highs and Pierce Arrow stock at its peak.

Grand Rapids, Mich. May 31. A 34 year old mother, Johanna Reese, confessed she poured carbolic acid on her 2 1/2 year old son Charles, causing fatal burns. Prosecutor Karl W. Munshaw says she planned to rid herself of him. The boy died Tuesday after the acid incident. She did not call a doctor and will be charged with first degree murder at arraignment tomorrow.
Michigan state parks opened the 1928 season with record crowds despite cool weather. Park commissioner P J Hoffmaster reported Island Lake Grand Haven park and Oakland county parks drew the largest opening day crowds on record, continuing a trend of earlierSpring starts and later fall visits.
In Spitzbergen near Kings Bay on May 21 expeditions of eight Italian chasseurs with Norwegian guides search the ice for the Italian polar airship under General Umberto Nobile. Norway launches relief by ship from Bergen to Kings Bay and plans seaplane support to accelerate the Arctic-wide search.
Michigan adds Tuscola Sanilac Lapeer and St. Clair counties to a 90 day rabies quarantine as part of a state-wide effort. Total quarantined counties reach 24 with 11 near the zone. State vet Dr. Killham warns against transporting dogs from quarantine to resort areas to prevent spread. Taxes due June 1 at city treasurer with penalties for late payment.

The Stewart contempt of Senate trial began in Washington as a four woman and eight man jury was sworn for Col. Robert W. Stewart, chairman of the Standard Oil Company of Indiana, with Justice I. I. Siddons presiding in the District of Columbia supreme court. This marks the seventh Teapot Dome related trial and jury selection was proceeding without delay.
President Coolidge plans a summer White House at Cedar Island Lodge on the Brule river in Wisconsin. The Pierce estate near Breule is about twelve hours by train from Chicago and the departure from Washington is expected a few days after June 11.

Capt Gerald Kingsford Smith and crew launched the Southern Cross from Oakland on a long trans Pacific voyage to Honolulu with a seven ton load and 1 200 gallons of gasoline for the 2100 mile first leg. Four thousand people watched as the plane lifted off despite engine trouble earlier in the day.

Toledo May 31 Charles Hoppe 26 a taxi driver confessed to police he kidnapped seven year old Dorothy Szelugowski from her home beat her and strangled her with her own undergarments then dumped the body on a relative’s porch. He pleaded not guilty at arraignment on first degree murder charges and held without bail as prosecutors seek the death penalty.

Eighth grade graduation exercises set for Saturday June 2 in the high school auditorium. Supt G E Ganiard will give the address at 10 00 am EST. Program includes invocation thoughts of youth music by the high school orchestra chorus and glee club diploma presentation and addresses by Miss Jean Binkley and others.
Emmitt Houck, proprietor of the Bluebird Lunch and West Broadway, announces plans to relocate to the former Patrick Carroll building at Broadway and Washington. The new quarters will be more commodious and up to date after remodeling, but occupancy will be delayed for some time.
An institute for social workers will be held July 16 to 28 at Michigan State College. C. R. Hoffler announced plans. Dr. Jesse F. Steiner of Tulane University will lecture, along with Miss Lucia Clow of the Milwaukee Family Welfare Society.

Funeral services were held at Sacred Heart church for Rev T J O Connor who served as a priest for nearly forty years. About fifty to sixty priests attended as the Knights of Columbus accompanied the body. The pontifical high mass was led by Bishop Joseph G Pinten with Monsignor Le Febvre assisting. The sermon, drawing on Ecclesiastes, urged gratitude for O Connors deeds and the faithful to remember their friend. A large cortege accompanied the body to Calvary cemetery. remaining family includes Edward Fitzgerald of Poughkeepsie and Miss Anna Marie Pitzgerald of Brooklyn.
Capt. W. Be Kepner led Army No. 1 to victory in the national elimination balloon race at Weems Virginia. From Bettis Field McKeesport 14 balloons started. 2 pilots were killed and 2 injured as a severe electrical storm halted the race.
