Washington May 11 substantial additions to national forests in the lake states New England and the South are assured under the McNary-Wood rail net signed by President Coolidge. It authorizes 8 million dollars for forest land purchases over three years with 2 million on July 1 1928 3 million on July 1 1929 and 3 million on July 1 1930. The act allows adding 22 500 acres to White Mountains New Hampshire and 400 000 acres in Upper Michigan and Minnesota. Michigan units include 250 000 acres near Marquette and 150 000 acres known as Mackinac near Munising. The plan stems from a compromise reducing a ten year 40 million program to three years with annual 2 million authorizations.
