Tokyo reports 2000 Japanese troops in the Tsinan area may press an aggressive policy against Chinese Nationalists after days of fighting. Casualties cited include 50 killed and 100 wounded as Chiang Kai Shek withdraws high forces from the besieged city amid rumors of British and American residents’ safety studies.
Prosecutor Clyde D. Underwood questioned Max Brooks in Battle Creek about Norman Monson a four year old boy missing ten days. Brooks an itinerant Jew claimed ignorance of the case and said he did not read English papers. No clue to the boy's disappearance has been found and further questioning was planned.
Washington reports Coast Guard and Navy blame disputes after the S 4 submarine collision with the Paulding off Provincetown on December 17, 1927. Secretary Mellon released findings absolving Lt Cmdr Bayliss and crew while the Navy board faulted the destroyer crew for not keeping clear under submarine code and sea rules.
United States Marines reported advancing today along the Waspook river district after an engagement with a small rebel band. No Marine casualties were reported.
The Bremen crew approved an itinerary for an air tour of the United States and Canada. Baron Gunther von Huenefeld Major James G Fitzmaurice and Captain Hermann Kocl depart Curtissfield New York at 9 00 am for Philadelphia in a Junkers F 13 sister ship to the Bremen. They will stop in Detroit Cleveland Chicago Milwaukee St Louis Boston Montreal and Quebec before returning to New York May 23.
Indianapolis reports a fierce campaign as Indiana voters prepare for a major primary. The battle centers on the 33 Republican delegates to the national convention with Senator James J. Watson challenging Herbert Hoover allies. Predictions range from 25 000 to 100 000 plurality for Watson and 70 000 to 100 000 for Hoover.
Glenn Stutting appeared before Justice M S Wardrop for speeding on city streets. He was fined the costs totaling 4.25 dollars.
The centennial convention of the American Peace Society began in Cleveland, Ohio, with leaders like Governor Donahey and U. S. Education Commissioner Tigert attending. A portrait of President Coolidge will be presented, and speeches by Dr. Nansen and Sir Esme Howard highlighted the opening. Six commissions will start sessions, including one on international implications of industry led by Harold G. Moulton.

Clarence Darrow, famed Chicago criminal lawyer, arrives in Jefferson to lead the opening address in the retrial of James Mussene. Mussene, jailed on bribery charges against Sheriff John H. Smith, has been convicted twice but granted new trials by higher courts.
The Beaver Lake Club Inc announces plans for the largest fur farm in Michigan to be located near Big Rapids in Mecosta County. The 1,000 acre tract of wasteland will include nine lakes and a creek and be put to fur farming use with an estimated investment of 100000 dollars.
Prince Carol of Romania prepared a flight from London to Romania to lead a movement restoring his throne. Two chartered airplanes waited at Graydn airport, but British authorities blocked departure due to lack of landing papers. He sent a courier to Budapest to seek permission and justify his claim amid postwar treaty tensions.

In Michigan the Chippewa Indians of the Saginaw Swan Creek and Black River bands lose their last legal bid for special hunting and fishing privileges. Attorney General Wilbur M. Brucker rules such rights from the 1807 treaty no longer apply as the land is private property after federal sale. Poh Tah Sunk of Alma denounces alleged frauds in allotments and criticizes white opportunism in the land transfers.
The Isabella county Sunday schools will be surveyed on May 18 and May 20 by workers from other churches. The visit aims to explain four vacation Bible schools in Mt Pleasant Winn Rosebush and Chippewa township and to collect statistics and offers.
Lansing May 7 A correspondence school detective failed to defraud an Eaton Rapids widow. Police said the man used a diploma stamped valid in Ohio only and expired January 1927 to claim he was a state detective owed for services. After an affidavit revealed the bill was a hoax he was released.
DETROIT May 7 Five year old Wright Weeks has been missing since Thursday night after entering a swamp on the road between Plymouth and River Rouge. Two Wayne County workmen reported seeing a stoop-shouldered man about 50, medium build carrying a small black leather satchel entering the swamp with a small boy. The man was seen leaving the swamp two hours later, but the boy was not with him. The boy was last seen by playmate Robert Fitzgerald at about 8 30 pulling a small wagon. the wagon was abandoned a few blocks away when the search began.
Chicago May 7 The Standard Oil company of Indiana declares a cash dividend of 62.5 cents and an extra 25 cents per share to be paid May 16, 1928.
Mrs. Marie Zwiemuller, 28, gave birth to twin boys while traveling on a train to Reid Austria. The mother and infants, both healthy, are reported to be doing well as the journey continues.
The Prince of Wales recently bought a motor conveyance to transport two of his favorite steeple chasers to races in which he participated.
An intense seven inning game Saturday at Central States Diamond saw the college freshmen edge Sebewaing High 2-1. Tubbs pitched well for the freshmen while Sebewaing’s Neginvick struggled with four throwing errors. Whit tle’s runs came on a walk and a single plus a steal of home in the sixth. Chett Potter, former Central State athlete, coaches Sebewaing. Local fans recall him as a key Maroon and Gold figure.
The Michigan conservation department announced plans to open Hartwick Pines Wilderness Park and Holland as new state parks this year. Hartwick Pines near Grayling is noted as the state’s largest virgin timber stand, memorialized by Mrs Karen Hartwick widow of Major Hartwick. Wilderness Park lies in Emmett County beside Carp Lake.
The congressional record printed the late Senator Woodbridge N. Ferris’s speech advocating a federal educational system. Read by Arthur H. Vandenberg at a joint House and Senate memorial service, the remarks were prepared by Ferris before his death.
Washington May 7 Compromise on the Mississippi flood control bill hinges on a White House conference between President Coolidge and Senate and House conferees. Chairman Reid announced that Coolidge would sign the bill with a compromise and minor revisions. Conferees met at 2:00 pm to make changes.
Central State opened strong after an exhibition loss to Herris Institute, then routed Detroit Institute of Technology 18 to 4 at the college field Saturday. Captain Pulkiner made a one handed catch in the fifth, and Central State pushed eight runs in the seventh aided by Detroit errors and hard hitting.
The Coldwater Lake grounds will take on a new appearance this spring. Work includes preparing lawns for small parks enlarging the dance pavilion and other minor improvements. About 3 500 trees including pines willows elms were planted from government sources in Washington.
Memorial services were held in both chambers for recently deceased lawmakers. In the House, Representative Gallavin of Massachusetts was honored, while the Senate paid tribute to Senator Ferris of Michigan. Attending were Mrs Ferris and other Ferris family members along with many senators and congressmen who lauded the deceased’s service.
In Greenville on May 7, engineers report three cracks at Cablerock Cove waterworks threatening a possible dam failure. Thousands nearby are prepared to evacuate, with a signal system set to warn residents if the dam breaks. Red Cross plans relief as rain continues.
Thirty seven men were rescued after the dredge Swinburn, a War Department vessel, was rammed by the tanker Navesink in lower New York harbor. John Simms of New Bedford, Mass., a second officer, described the collision as the dredge’s weight and wide beam making it hard to maneuver. Simms, struck by a box during the crash, was freed and alerted others as the Swinburn began sinking seconds after.
LANSING Michigan May 7 The appointment of Ray Cotton of Ypsilanti secretary of the department of conservation in place of John Jontz who resigned recently because of ill health was made today Cotton is a World War I veteran and was assistant quartermaster of the 32nd Division For ten years he was a bank official at Ypsilanti and in 1927 connected with the state banking department.
Webster H Pearce state school superintendent challenged stronger cooperation between home and school in educating youth. He warned teachers and parents to share responsibility, noting schooling alone does not equal education and urging parental example and involvement in moral and religious development. The address was given at First Methodist church.
Central State baseball coach Lodewyk guides a busy week with St Marys of Orchard Lake coming Thursday for a storied city diamond feud. After rain washed out their first conference start, the Saints travel Ferris on Friday for a Big Rapids doubleheader. The slate then includes Detroit Tech, with Central State hoping to rebound from recent losses and improve pitching depth across a three game span.
