President Hoover urged world businessmen to force statesmen to disarm as the paramount issue facing global progress. He warned that taxation funds armed forces and warned of the costs of potential conflicts, noting millions under arms and rising annual military expenses.
The Michigan chapter of the Catholic Daughters of America closed its biennial meeting in Jackson with Manistee chosen as the next convention site. Lena O Malley of Battle Creek was re elected state regent and Isabel Ley of Grand Rapids became state vice regent. Rev Monsignor D E Majone of Grand Rapids spoke at the convention.
Chicago police chief J Z Miller of Glenview Village says he will not trust a steam fitter and a welder together in jail after Frank and Raymond Wright escaped a jail cell. The pair, held on burglary charges, reportedly dismantled the jail during an overnight unguarded period.
Forecast calls for generally fair conditions in Lower Michigan with increasing clouds tonight and Tuesday. Showers and cooler conditions expected in the northwest and extreme west portions by Tuesday afternoon or night, with a slight warm-up in the extreme east tonight. Temperatures read 8am values from 48 to 64 across multiple locations including Grand Rapids Ludington Marquette and other listed sites.
Oklahoma farmers adopt the Osage cooperative mineral plan to pool half of their mineral rights on a set number of acres. A trust company acts as trustee, mirroring the Osage system used since 1906 and credited with amassing substantial wealth for the Osage Nation. The movement began in Texas county Oklahoma in 1928 and has grown into a nationwide effort.
Ex banker and philanthropist George F. Baker dies after a three day illness. His simple funeral at Tulledo Park estate will be held with no eulogy or honorary pallbearers. He led First National Bank and American Telephone and Telegraph interests and amassed a fortune in the hundreds of millions.
Jackson Michigan May 4 Rev J I Bowerman renewed his demand for a grand jury investigation into vice conditions in Jackson county. He called Parma and Jackson sinkholes of iniquity and offered to present evidence to Prosecutor Harry Boardman with his own counsel if a special prosecutor appointed by the attorney general handles the case. He warned a grand jury could be manipulated to whitewash the facts.
In Ber Rien county two fatalities occurred in weekend crashes. Charles Hanay aged 57 of Coloma died Sunday night when struck by a car driven by Ken Meth Mantelle of Kalamazoo. Eva Mae Schuer man, four, died after being struck by a car driven by Dorothy Voorhees, a neighbor. The child's father witnessed the accident.
The senate seeks to oust George Otis Smith head of the Federal Power Commission arguing lack of legal confirmation under senate rules. John W. Davis and Alex J. Groesbeck filed the petition in DC Supreme Court with Pepper and Mitchell aiding. The case tests executive vs legislative powers and may go to the Supreme Court with a term ending in 1935.

A new movement named the allied forces was announced to back the eighteenth amendment with a coast to coast series of conferences mass meetings and advertising campaigns. Dr Daniel A Poling led the push with sponsors including Thomas Edison Senator Borah Senator Sheppard Governor Pinchot and Mount Holyoke President Mary E Wooley. Richard H Scott was named president of the American business men's prohibition foundation and plans include public meetings and a youth program to defend the amendment.
Norval Eyes a about 20 from Cee township awaiting examination for commitment to the state hospital at Traverse City after a series of jail break attempts. He damaged padding in a padded cell and twisted free a steel bar while in a steel cell, but otherwise gave little trouble. his parents are not living.
Attendance at the first annual rural teachers conference at Central State Teachers College Mt Pleasant drew educators from 25 Michigan counties. The event, under Kellsy Appleblossom club auspices, featured Roy Note ware and other educators on the theme Professionalization of the Rural Teachers.
Firemen fought a stubborn basement fire at the William Salisbury home 610 South Washington Sunday afternoon. The blaze defied responders for about half an hour before the source was found and extinguished. Dense smoke and gas fumes blocked entry. once the gas meter area was shut off the fire eased and a hose line entered the basement. Origin uncertain but linked to a faulty gas line near the meter. only minor damages reported.
In Flint Michigan on May 4 preliminary hearings resumed as Helen J Morgan heiress stands accused of killing Leslie Casteel a 38 year old garage mechanic Police reported harassment of witnesses and defense questioned claims of a 3 AM interrogation Her mother defended her daughter and claimed Casteel threatened to murder the heiress. Local officials hoped to finish examination of Helen Morgan after a weekend adjournment Prosecutor Freeman warned the state would pursue all angles to determine the crime and its degree.
Lansing reports 60 short term prisoners from Marquette prison are being moved today to the Ionia reformatory to relieve overcrowding in the Michigan system.
The 1981 city construction program began with ground breaking for a new Washington Street pavement between Michigan and High. An additional block on Lansing Street will be built this summer, including curb and gutter. The project covers about half a mile and should finish by July 1 if weather cooperates. The work will create jobs for several men during full paving.
City officials call the spring clean-up campaign the most successful in history. From April 27 through the week, about 400 to 450 loads of rubbish were collected, piling up at the city dump as residents joined in the drive. The effort aligns with Hoover’s national Spring Cleaning campaign.

Per capita weekly earnings in eleven sectors dropped from 25.82 in October to 23.83 in January. Farm food prices slid from 151 in 1929 to 108 in December 1930 as retail food prices fell 174 to 147, with transportation costs rising.
