Michigan lawmakers face a stalemate over capital punishment as the House struck out the referendum provision from a Senate bill. With a 61 to 34 vote, opponents hailed the move, while supporters fear the measure may die if the Senate rejects the House changes and a conference committee is unable to resolve the standoff.
Lou Foote, pilot of the plane that carried 14 wagons to their deaths on March 17, was exonerated by a grand jury investigating the accident. The panel declined to indict him, and Foote, injured, had been in hospital for over a month. A manslaughter charge had been filed previously and he was released on $5,000 bail after arraignment.
In Plymouth at Cattewater Royal Air Station Col T E Lawrence known as Aircraftman Shaw is revealed. The famous “Uncrowned King of Arabia” arrived from Arabia in February and, despite secrecy, his Oxford accent and 5 foot 3 inch stature exposed him. He now shares a hut with aircraft men and forbids mention of his real name or Arabia in daily life.
The Pennsylvania legislature has passed a bill authorizing a detective training school at Temple University in Philadelphia. Governor John S. Fisher will sign the measure, marking the first such program at a college or university in the United States.
The first of a series of free diphtheria clinics was held at Dr C D Pullen's office on South College avenue. Clinics will run every Sunday afternoon from 4 to 6 for immunizing children and re ex am in ing treatment is urged for all eligible youngsters.

San Quentin prison May 3. Convict Evangelist Troupe led by Jenks D Harris plans a nationwide tour after his October parole. Harris, a former cowboy and actor, will travel by airplane with Johnnie Batkis as advance man and publicity agent. An unnamed pilot funds the effort. The group will be called Church of God Evangelistic Troupe and remain undenominational.
In Los Angeles on May 3 police raided a luxuriously furnished Wilshire apartment and stunned eight alleged flagellants in a self-harm ritual. They sought a woman known as Queen Isis, said to lead the cult, while officers reported self-hypnotism and participants skilled in the dark arts.
Nine year old Rose Lombardo in San Francisco showed a remarkable fever drop from 112 to 104 after surgery for acute mastoiditis following scarlet fever. Doctors noted the thermometer could not read above 110 on Fahrenheit scales and used a centigrade instrument for higher readings. Blood poisoning occurred after the operation but the trend suggested recovery.
Washington reports that Congress shows little desire to end the port privilege for officials returning from overseas trips. Rep. Fred A. Britten argues the courtesy remains unnecessary to repeal, noting officials rarely violate it and no contraband is typically brought back.
A Dallas man complained to Judge Noland G Williams that his wife used weekly alimony payments for cosmetics and pet supplies. He reported eight dollars furnished that week covered facial products, a dog collar, dog meat, and flea powder. The judge dismissed a contempt charge against the husband.
The Mexican government announced full possession of Sonora after two months of rebel seizure. Gen. Escobar and Gen. Caraveo were reported missing near the U S border as Gen. Campu was captured. Officials said Sonora was now free of rebels and the overall situation in the country was normal.
Sioux City Iowa May 3 Farmers claim a muralist erred in the Woodbury County courthouse pastoral scene by making the Holstein cow tail tip nonwhite. Critics say the artist hid the white tip behind a dog’s head. Farmers dispute, insisting the tip is not white and thus the cow isn’t a Holstein.
Geneva dispatch notes Spain advancing rapidly in pacific dispute resolution. Spain has 19 League of Nations treaties for peaceful settlement and has signed the optional clause of the Permanent Court of International Justice, accepting compulsory jurisdiction. Many treaties go beyond arbitration to compel decisions.
The Department of Music at Central State Teachers College presents Verdi's Aida on Thursday May 9 in the college auditorium. Aida features Lorna Hooper Warfield as Aida and Ernest Davis as Radames with Louise Stallings Amneris and William Phillips Amonasro. The Chicago Festival Opera company backs the production on a limited Michigan tour.
Senator Carter Glass rebutts claims against Secretary Mellon by noting many past treasury secretaries owned stock. Glass recalls McAdoo and Houston were stockholders and cites earlier secretaries. He admits owning stock but says he divested bank holdings. The debate centers on whether Mellon’s holdings violate the prohibition on treasurers in trade and commerce.

Central State heads into a busy weekend with a three sport slate. Wally Blood leads the pitching for Central in the Adrian game.
Three men were seriously injured when a bomb exploded in downtown Pittsburgh last night. The blast shattered a two story building and damaged nearby windows. Police attributed the attack to a political feud and believed the device was tossed from a passing automobile.
A Virginia windstorm killed fourteen school children and their teacher in Rye Cove and injured over 100 others. The disaster plus tornadoes across the South left multiple deaths and widespread property damage from Virginia to Georgia and Alabama.
A Saturday tag day fundraiser at Mt Pleasant supports Sunnycrest School for Girls in Holland. Mrs H Fisher leads the event with girls selling items and a prize offered for the top fundraiser. The school serves girls ages five to fourteen through gifts and contributions.
Detroit May 3. High for mer customs patrolmen were sentenced today in federal court for their parts in a liquor conspiracy alleged to have smuggled about 50 million dollars worth of liquor across the Detroit river from Ontario to the Detroit area. The convicted pleaded guilty and received terms from six months and a 3000 fine to one year and a day in prison. two were placed on probation.

Read Jr. And Shiver Raton New Mexico May 8 Merino Valley was thawing after the severest wintry spell in its history. In 29 nights the thermometer averaged 38 degrees below zero and on 18 nights it fell to 46 below, per valley residents the coldest spot in the state.
Kansas City Missouri May 3 Robert Noonan 30 confessed to police he turned to burglary after bootlegging proved hazardous. He was arrested returning from a job that netted 600 two cent stamps and a supply of soap perfume and face powder. Noonan now has time to consider other hazardous occupations.
Walter Red Haynes of Bay City and Ruth Sarah McShea of Mount Pleasant filed marriage license applications. The record notes their intention to wed in a forthcoming ceremony.
