Wabash Breaks Ice Path To Rescue Mail Boat Crew
At Leland Michigan on March 25 a battle with ice on Lake Michigan ended with the Ann Arbor car ferry Wabash breaking through to reach a mail boat and a Coast Guard boat four miles off North Manitou Island. Ten men were aboard the two vessels and had been prisoners since yesterday. The mail boat crew included Capt. Tracy Grosvefors and others from Gills Pier Leland and Ludington. The Coast Guard craft returned to South Manitou after the rescue. Both boats were cabin type and had no fuel for provisions.

Michigan conservation officials announce spear and dip net season starts April 1 in waters not designated as trout streams. From April 1 to May 31 artificial light may be used to spear non game fish in non trout streams. Non game fish include catfish bull heads and several others with wall eyed pike excluded.
