EAST LANSING March 22 Maple sugar is being produced at Michigan State college sugar bush under a new steam boiling process. The method uses 80 pound steam pressure to speed boiling and reduce reliance on open fires. Michigan could yield about 150000 gallons of syrup this year and ranks fifth in state production. Experiments show sap from black walnut hickory and other trees can make syrup, though flow is inconsistent.
