State To Push Federal Roads
Lansing March 10 U R The 1931 policy of the state highway department to rely on federal aid and to avoid prison labor will add 2000 to 2500 more workers on construction this year. Highway commissioner Grover Dillman said the shift to federal aid allows the state to spend over four million dollars more than normal revenue would permit, boosting employment over last summer. The policy reduces prison labor, raising free workers by about 2500 compared with 1980. In 1930 prison usage declined from 1929 when 800 to 1200 prisoners were used.
