Senate oil investigation faces a maze of dead witnesses in tracing 1921 Continental Trading Co. bonds. Will Hays says he gave 160000 in bonds to three men who are now deceased, including Upham Pratt and Weeks. Senator Walsh may seek record books to verify a 60000 payment to Upham as probe risks ending without new facts.
The Tourist club met at Miss Elizabeth Wightman’s East High street home with assistant hostess Mrs. K P Brooks. Mrs C C Barnes read two one act plays For Distinguished Service and China Pig. Miss Nelles Ballister returned after illness. guests included Mrs Bairies, Mrs C F E Vowles, Mrs R O Doughty, Mrs Stuart Hayden, and Mrs MacLachlan of Ann Arbor. Refreshments followed.
Government and military aircraft resume fifth day of search for Commander T G Ellyson and two lieutenants Hugo Schmidt and Roger Raneshausen lost on a March flight from Hampton Roads to Annapolis. Naval craft near Annapolis reported oil slick about 25 feet wide but found no trace of plane or crew.
In Rome on March 2 a grand funeral for Marshal Armando Diaz Duke of Victory drew a government and top military escort to Altare Della Patria. The procession stood without hats as the unknown Soldier’s tomb awaited, with lights in mourning along the route and a salute as the cortège passed.
In Managua on March 2, U P dispatch reports Marine forces plan pursuit into the Nueva Lagova hills to capture Augustino Sandino. A Monday surprise attack on a Marine detachment cost five lives and left eight wounded, with no word yet on U S forces after the engagement.
A three way race for California's 26 Democratic national convention votes forms around William G. McAdoo Senator James A. Reed and Governor Al Smith. Reed filed for the May 1 primary and attacked President Coolidge and Herbert Hoover during a 3000 voter rally.
Michigan resident buyers purchased 7 657 autos in January 1928 up from 7 494 in January 1927. Overall dealer sales fell from 1 771 to 195. Chevrolet sales rose from 1 881 to 1 837 while Isabella County declined from 45 to 24 cars.
Isabella county board of road commissioners met to unanimously accept the contract with Isaac Denslow to serve as county road superintendent. Denslow assumes duties immediately. A second motion authorized paying Jim Croskery $59.64 to settle all claims against Isabella county and the clerk.

William McAndrews former Chicago schools superintendent files libel suit for 250000 against Mayor William Hale Thompson. Attorney Francis X. Busch says the suit follows a five month board of education dispute in which McAndrews was condemned as unpatriotic amid talk of America First and political demagoguery. He claims an honest court and jury will decide his case.
Mrs. Lemira Goodhue mother of Mrs. Galvin Coolidge was cheered by her daughter's visit in Northampton Massachusetts. The first lady made two visits, one after arrival and another late afternoon, then spent the night at the home and returned for a morning visit.
Detroit luncheon speaker Joseph W. Fordney urges voters to elect Arthur Vandenberg as senator and praises Coolidge Hoover and Dawes as capable leaders. Fordney, veteran congressman from Michigan, cites his Ways and Means experience and predicts a well fitted man in Washington.
Dieudonne Corses and Joseph Lebrix, French aviators touring the United States, left Mitchell Field New York at 11 37 A M bound for Detroit. They will be Henry Ford guests until tomorrow then resume the airmail flight to San Francisco.
The Michigan state conservation commission opened several inland lakes for fishing from April 1 to June 15 after a five year ban. Lakes include Millecoquins Mackinac Black Lake Chuboygan Crooked Hubbard Mitchell Cadillac Elkin Gladwin Jakes Manistee Macomb counties. Camp Custer game refuge at Battle Creek was abandoned as unsuitable. Hogarth authorized delay of moving pictures at Beaver Island and bird breeding grounds. Hoffmaster’s park exhibition proposal referred for April report.
Lansing limits set on Michigan bass with new rules reducing legal length to ten inches. Daily catch restricted to five bass and ten in possession at once for fishermen statewide.
Berkeley Calif March 2 U P The discovery of Vitamin F the sixth vitamin was announced by Dr Herbert M Evans chairman of UC anatom y department and chemist Dr George O Burr now at the University of Minnesota The finding followed tests on rats using purified casein refined sugar and specific salts part of the diet to trigger the vitamin production.
A coroner’s jury under M F Brandstetter will investigate the Wednesday auto crash that fatally injured Joseph Ege of Union Township. The inquiry, likely next week, follows Ege being struck as he crossed the road in front of his son’s home four miles north of Mt Pleasant by a car driven by Bagil Bring of Clare.
Tyrus Raymond Cobb returns to the Philadelphia Athletics for another season after accepting terms in a telegram from Fort Myers. Cobb had considered retirement, but his friendship with manager Connie Mack led him back, joining veterans Cobb Sneaker and Collins as key figures in the lineup.
Herbert Hoover’s name was entered in the Wisconsin primary by an unauthorized supporter and will be withdrawn. George Akerson, Hoover aide, said the secretary of commerce had not approved the entry and Wisconsin supporters lacked organization for the bid.

The Canadian minister Mr Massey labels a scholar as an ore whose learning outstrips his intelligence. The paper apologizes to ladies for referring to them as lowbrows after a picture delay incident.
New York March 2 The annual report of American Telephone and Telegraph shows the company leading all industrial interests with assets of four billion dollars. Closest follower is United States Steel with about two and a half billion. Other billion dollar firms include Southern Pacific Railroad Penn Central New YorkCentral Standard Oil of New Jersey Union Pacific Atchison Topeka Santa Fe General Motors and Ford.
The Forest City limited derailed at Sian Ohio twenty miles west of Toledo. The engine and 18 cars left the track but no fatalities. One hundred fifty one passengers were badly shaken but none injured seriously.
The remains of John D. Culick died in Seattle February 24 arrive in Mt. Pleasant. He is buried at Riverside cemetery after a Methodist service by Rev. M. B. Reusch. He was 77, son of Henry Gulick and pioneer settler in Isabella county. Survived by wife Mary Ann Allen dated earlier, two daughters Ruth Conklin and Edith Terrill, and many nieces and nephews.
Two wolverines arrived in Lansing from Alaska as a gift to Michigan State. The animals join university traditions, with famed mascots Benny and Biff paraded at football games. The wolverine, once plentiful, faces possible extinction as habitat and food decline reduce numbers.
Sparks from a chimney started a blaze that destroyed the brick 11 room Brophy residence in Denver township Isabella county Thursday about 3 00 pm. Mrs Brophy 72 alone inside. neighbors aided and the tenant house was saved. Loss covered by insurance. the Brophy family had remodeled the home recently and were staying with the Mitterspaughs nearby.
