President Hoover announced he will sign the Smoot Hawley tariff bill within days to stabilize business, despite misgivings about its fairness. Republicans praised the move while Democrats warned of political fallout as adjournment looms and campaigns begin.
Three operettas will be presented by the junior high school on Tuesday evening at the college storium. The program includes The Gobbler and the Elves Johnny Appleseed and Cinderella with a ten cent admission to help cover costumes. Mrs Sarah Anne Loomis of Grand Rapids Mich visiting the grave of her sons in France was admitted to the American hospital here with a slight cold.
Detroit police and state officers announce the arrest of three men and a woman, alleged leaders of a kidnap ring that operated across the Midwest. They say the gang, formed in pre prohibition days, vowed to prey on gamblers and later businessmen, with murders linked to the gang and investigations extending to Chicago Cleveland St Louis New York. Authorities seek seven more members including Fred Burke in connection with past crimes.
Detroit June 16. John W. Comerford a wealthy Grosse Pointe resident has again disappeared prompting his wife to fear abduction by a kidnaping ring now under investigation by city and state police. Three years ago Comerford was driven to Chicago by armed men. He is nephew of Thomas J. Conderford a well known scales manufacturer.
In Washington Senator Pat Harrison accuses President Hoover of misleading the public about the Smoot Hawley tariff as the bill moves toward signature. He cites GOP leaders’ alleged deceit and cites market lows to support his claim of Gruniddyism and political maneuvering.
Judge Ray Hall opened the June session of the circuit court as eight defendants pleaded guilty. Sentences were to be passed that afternoon. The docket includes 17 civil cases, nine chancery actions, 11 divorce cases, and a long-standing civil suit, likely occupying the full week with some matters possibly moved to the next term.
In Lansing on June 16, Clark Brown said seven Republicans have filed nominating petitions to date with the secretary of State. Named are John G. Ketcham Hastings for Congress in the 4th district James C. McLaughlin Muskegon for Congress in the 9th district James T. Anjohn Kalamazoo for State Senator 6th district William F. Turney Marley for State Senator 25th district Eugene Brown St. Leonace for State Senator 30th district Edward L. Sargent Levering and Dana Hinkley Petoskey for State Representative Emmet Mackinac district. Final filing date July 22.

Toledo Yacht Club cooperated with coast guard in a search of Lake Erie for seven men missing since a powerful speed boat left Toledo for Pelee Island for an Elks picnic. The boat was found adrift with three life preservers and a hat aboard.
Gov. Fred W. Green leads ground breaking for a new 7 500 000 dollar state hospital seven miles southwest of Ypsilanti. More than 50 state officials participate in the ceremony. Justice Fead closes the event with an address. The hospital will hold 3000 beds upon completion. Justice Potter to speak at a dinner tonight.
Gerald F Beane former editor of the Providence Journal joins the Mt Pleasant Daily Times staff to oversee advertising and general business and to serve as treasurer of Times Press Inc Orlie Ay Bishop advertising manager of the Daily Times leaves for the Daily Sentinel at Holland Michigan to start July 1 The Bishop couple leave Mt Pleasant with many friends praising his record and community service
Ambassador Charles G. Dawes says he cannot lead a crime fighting movement in Chicago while on a month long visit in the United States. He will return to London to resume duties and has not been asked to serve on any crime commission. A separate report from Muskegon notes six year old Dora Lampert and 88 year old Lena Birch killed when a car skid and overturned near Whitehall. driver John Birch unharmed.
In Marion Michigan a deputy sheriff shot at Lyle Kilmer 18 during an intensive manhunt after he fled a deputy. Kilmer surrendered hours later near the Ann Arbor railroad grade and admitted robbing three Marion establishments last week. The incident followed robberies at Marion Hardware, Decker garage and Dr. Lampman’s office. Kilmer faced charges and a separate sentence for a Cicero night club case was noted.
The New York Stock Exchange fell sharply in a session described as the market’s most drastic decline since last November. Prices slid 2 to 18 points, wiping out billions in value and setting new yearly lows across major issues including U S Steel American Telephone and Bethlehem Steel. The downturn broadened to outside centers as commodity prices also hit year lows amid tariff and Hoover tariff bill comments. Bearish sentiment sparked a brief covering rally around steel and Consolidated Gas before renewed selling pushed prices to session lows.
Isabella county authorities moved Buskowski to federal court in Bay City after arrest in Nottawa township where a mash and a still were found. He had prior moonshine charges with a six month to two year sentence and release followed by renewed operation. Citizens plan to petition Judge Tuttle to seek the maximum penalty.
Sacred Heart academy holds class day exercises for the 1930 graduating class this evening at the high school auditorium. Program includes Salutatory by Gerald Smith, chorus by Girls Glee Club, Seniors Frolic, Class Will by Agatha Kirkey, Valedictory by Stella Marie Schmitt, remarks by Rev. John A. Mulvey, and the class song. The motto is Not how much, but how well. colors pink and lavender, rose flower. Wednesday evening the exercises occur at Sacred Heart church with Rev. John Fons to deliver the address. Graduates of 1920 listed.
Flint bankers from the Union Industrial Bank face release after minimum terms end June 27. Clifford A. Plumb Robert P. Brown and Robert H. D McDonald have six months to 20 years sentences. A. J. Schlosser may also be released pending judge's recommendation.
Floyd Nelson of Frost township Clare county was arrested Saturday night by Sheriff Hunt Wodds and Deputy Sheriff Daniel Crouse after officers found three gallons of alleged moonshine whiskey in his car at Clare. Nelson, owner of Lakeside hotel at Bluegill Lake, was lodged in county jail and federal authorities at Bay City were notified. The officers also found quantities of intoxicating liquor at Bluegill Lake.
The June 16 report notes President Hoover’s name beside former Presidents Harding and Coolidge and Vice-President Curtis on a ball owned by Eddie Myers of Charleroi Pa. The ball, inscribed by National League president John A Heydler, was given to Eddie when he captained the pages’ baseball team.
Preliminary figures reveal the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 11.04 points to 233.21, a new low for 1980 and the largest decline of the year. The Dow’s drop pushed the railroad average down 2.67 to 181.79, another record low.
Mt Pleasant Odd Fellows welcomed several hundred visiting lodges for the Saginaw Valley circuit rally. The parade featured Patriarch Militants and the Ladies Auxiliary, with floats including a flag making scene. Ben Winslow gave the welcome, Travas Gulp of Battle Creek delivered the main address, and four banquets followed by a district degree work.
New York obituary notes the death of E A Sperry 40 inventor of the gyroscope and other devices. He died Savannah after a winter setback and hospitalization from April 27. His work preceded Edison in inventor rankings with electric mining machinery and rotary cutters. He founded the Sperry Electric Company of Chicago and won a 1888 competition for electrical mining gear.
Chicago report on June 16 details the City of Chicago endurance refueling flight by brothers John Beans and Walter Hunter. The trio has logged 108 hours aloft over Sky Harbor, with Walter piloting the plane and signaling they do not intend to land before July 4. The endurance craft departed Wednesday at 4 42 p.m. and has been refueled twice daily at about 5 000 feet.
