In Detroit a scheduled 15 round boxing match ended in the second round by foul. The fouled fighter said his opponent did not foul on purpose, and the opponent apologized. Both kept a gentlemanly tone after the incident.
A Chicago boy Cyril Watson aged 11 dies when trampled by a Shetland pony after saving for five years to buy it. The piece contrasts bare facts with the human interest angle, arguing readers prefer the emotional side of events.

Log shows the nonstop flight began July 13 at 7 17 a m and ended July 30 at 7 38 30 p m totaling 420 hours 21 minutes 30 seconds. The flight surpassed Angeleno by 173 hours 37 minutes 58 seconds with 3590 gallons of fuel and 77 refuels earning about 31250 dollars for the two pilots.
After landing a glass door of the St Louis Robin opened and out stepped two neat, freshly shaven young men dressed in dark trousers and clean white shirts with straw hats. Continued on page 6.
Cheboygan July 31. The new Hotel Topina bee opens its doors replacing the burned down Topinabee hotel on Mullett Lake. Carpenters still finish work but guests may dine sleep and stay. Proprietor John I Bailey built the fire proof complex with linked units and a separate fire proof kitchen and heating plant.
Due to an anticipated shortage of ice a 10 cent per cwt increase will take effect August 1. The Tice Ice Co. advertises this price adjustment.
GRAND RAPIDS July 31 Charles Carr held for the murder of Adelbert Haybuaker had Peter Hartesvelt former assistant prosecuting attorney of Kent county volunteer to defend him free of charge when Hartesvelt discovered Carr had only eight cents. Hartesvelt said to take the case for the fight of it and I won't charge him a penny. Circumstantial evidence is all the prosecution seems to have and I believe Carr has a chance. Hartesvelt was an unsuccessful candidate for prosecutor last election.
The Manistique river log drive, ending Bonanza lumbering in Michigan and Wisconsin, will finish as about 2,500,000 feet of pine, hemlock, and hardwood move toward the mill. The final drive, begun last winter, was skidded into the Driggs river and briefly delayed by flood stages before resuming on the millward course. Veteran lumberman Frank N. Cookson leads the last drive with Maine training.
Yosemite Valley July 31 Three shepherd dogs with a firm yet kindly nature and a strong instinct to protect tourists may find homes by applying to Colonel Thompson superintendent. He desires the dogs to roam the park freeing visitors from bear scares and guiding people away from bears that have damaged cars and frightened picnickers by insisting on food.
Col and Mrs Charles A Lindbergh survive two separate crashes in one day as their Curtiss Falcon hits floodlights at Newark airport and a tire blows out. No injuries reported. They drive to the Morrow estate in Englewood and await further word on the incidents.
Senator James R. Couzens denounces the secret party system behind tariff bills. He told Republican Finance Committee members he would inform Michigan voters about house rates and exemptions. The Detroit mayor and Ford associate opposes secrecy and may face GOP repercussions for his disclosures.

A justice court jury acquitted Ed. McDonald of assault and battery after finding he slapped a girl when she called him a visa name. The July 31 decision in Iron River involved a dispute over provocative language and self defense claims.
Madrid July 8 Major Raymond Franco faced government censure after a trans Atlantic flight failed. A military reprimand was inserted into the records of Maj Eduardo Gallarza and Capt Ruiz De Alda. Franco said he would not return to military aviation until reforms are made.
Lansing July 81 Arthur D. Wood Michigan prison commissioner says the Auburn rebellion likely stemmed from confinement, with the Baumes law of New York state having little influence.
State commissioner of corrections Dr Raymond F C Kieb cited overcrowded conditions as the cause of riots at Auburn and Dannemore prisons.
Wood notes statements from New York officials blaming habitual criminal laws for prison unrest. He cites Michigan's earlier code and its adoption of harsher penalties for repeat felons. He argues riots are a historic risk and that public sentiment against the penalties is unlikely to trigger widespread rebellion.
The Michigan Council of Religious Education plans its 69th annual state convention in Pontiag from October 29 to 31 with the slogan A Convention that is Different. Delegates must be approved by the state council. Mrs Hazel Vp Leonard of Detroit serves as executive secretary of the Detroit council.

Chicago reports four heat deaths amid near 90 degree heat with no breeze. New York endures a 90 degree day as heat wave lingers with possible thunder showers tomorrow.
Axtell-Harkins No 1, drilled by Pure Oil, reported a flow of 500 barrels in three hours, the highest on record in the field. The well lies in the NE SE section 11 Chippewa township and was formerly known as Henderschott No 1.
At a stockholders meeting on July 31 at the John Bale farm near Lakeview the well being drilled will continue down 300 to 400 feet to reach the Niagara formation. Initial plans called for shooting the well Saturday but company geologists advised deeper drilling.
