Lansing July 30 United Press reports legal action targeted at the 1929 malt tax. Attorney Arthur E. Anderson drafts an injunction to halt collection, arguing the law is discriminatory by taxing malt for some uses while exempting others. Gov Green vows to fight, notes referendum may derail revenue aiding a $17.2 million building plan.
Comer Monrey bit into a hard boiled egg in Manistique Michigan and found a second perfectly formed small egg with a hard shell inside the larger egg.
Dr. Ernest Fuchs of Vienna to be awarded the Leslie Dana gold medal for 1929 in recognition of outstanding achievement in blindness prevention and vision conservation. The presentation will occur at the International Ophthalmological Congress in Amsterdam on Sept. 10.
Harold Bromley, intending to fly from Tacoma to Tokyo, will supervise construction of a new plane at Lockheed in Burbank after the City of Tacoma wrecked here. In LESSLE on July 30 a farmer, Charles Starkweather, found his cow buried in a 26 foot straw stack during threshing. The animal emerged unharmed after a 72 hour burial and walked to a water trough before returning to the pasture.

James Meyers a 17 year old youth was sentenced from one to ten years in the Ionia reformatory after admitting he stole an automobile to take his girl for a ride. He was arrested at his home as he prepared to flee to New York following a crash in the stolen car which injur ed his female companion. Meyers had served a 60 day term last fall for obtaining money under false pretenses claiming to solicit subscriptions for a local high school basketball team.

A warrant for 34 year old Charles Carr, a factory worker, charges him with the murder of 55 year old Adelbert Haybraker last Friday in his Homoacres cottage near here. Prosecutor Bartel J. Jonkman says evidence is sufficient for conviction. Carr was arraigned and his examination set for August 16 in circuit court.

John Beddow 29 son of I A Beddow died in Tucson Arizona Sunday morning after illness. He enlisted in 1917 and served in France before contracting pneumonia. He had lived in Mount Pleasant since childhood and later moved to Phoenix for recovery. Funeral services will be held Friday at his home with burial to follow. He is survived by his father two sisters Margaret and Helen and three brothers Thomas Fred and Herbert.
Grand Rapids July 30. Police Superintendent A A Carroll launches a drive to curb local boys who swim naked in pools after hijacking freight trains and vandalizing property. He cites four youths stealing apples for use as ammunition and says juvenile court will handle the unruly gang.
In Great Falls, Lee Elbrader, a telegraph office night clerk, had a coworker close a vault door on him to feel what it was like to be locked in. The door locked and could not be opened. More than an hour passed before it was opened and Elbrader, unconscious, was freed.
Washington reports that Army aviation may bear a large share of war department savings under Hoover economy plans. Officials note air corps costs rose from about $600000 to $50000000 since World War I, with navy aviation likewise growing. Potential cuts may delay housing and aviation expenditures and reduce activities at interior posts of limited strategic value.

Three Rivers July 80 U P Harry Blackstone the world famed magician filed for divorce from Inez Blackstone on charges of extreme cruelty. The couple married November 4 1917 in Menominee Michigan and separated in 1928 after Inez left the show in Buffalo New York. There were no children.
Shirley L Freeman a radio salesman and his blind terrier were linked for ten years. Freeman rushed to save the dog from an electric train but was struck and killed. The incident occurred in Los Angeles on July 30.
