Hoover and advisors in Palo Alto plan a dignified campaign echoing Coolidge 1924. They expect Hoover's acceptance speech on August 1 to be brief and non explosive, outlining a business like, efficient government program.
Miss Helen Wills of Berkeley California advances to the third round of the Essex County clubs fourth annual women invitation tournament in Manchester by the Sea Massachusetts. She defeated Miss Louise Iskin of New Rochelle New York in 19 minutes 6-0 6-0.
The American Legion Auxiliary elected delegates for the state convention to meet in Petoskey in September. Delegates are Miss Norma Nagel Nellie Willey and Mrs Jennie Grimm with alternates Mrs Jenny Tice Mrs Mary Clare and Mrs Emma Pardee. Committee chairmen absent are asked to file reports or contact the secretary.
George Haldeman pilot for Ruth Elder on the attempted Atlantic crossing landed at St. Paul Municipal Airport at 10 51 a m making the first leg of the national air tour from Fargo North Dakota.
The Rosebush vacation Bible school closed with a picnic at Coldwater Lake on Friday July 90. It began July 9 with 57 pupils, totaling 141 for two weeks. The peak attendance was 115 on Tuesday the 27th, and average daily attendance was 95.5. Thirteen volunteer workers from local churches directed instruction. Enrolled pupils came from Rose Bush M E, Center M E, Weidman M E, Drew Union, Wise, Salem Evangelical, and Seavon M E.
Alfred P. Sloan Jr announces the board accepted John J. Raskob resignation as GM finance committee chairman with regret. The move is said temporary until after Governor Alfred E. Smith's presidential campaign ends. Raskob also leaves the GM executive committee.
U S Colonel Charles A Lindbergh reportedly paid over 30 000 in federal taxes for 1927 with six months earnings around 204 000 and income sources including the Orteig prize royalties book articles and a touring aviation goodwill effort paid at about 300 a day.
Mrs Myrtle Huddleston of Chicago was in critical condition after a 64 hour nonstop swim at the Metropolitan pool ending with an endurance record attempt. Doctors at St Francis Hospital cited exhaustion. She began Saturday morning and swam 64 hours straight, surpassing her 50 hour 10 minute record.
Mexico City reports that Luis Morones former labor secretary and Obregon party opponent is in hiding as details of Jose de Leon Toval's confession emerge. An Obregon party faction blames Morones’ labor group for the assassination and calls for removal of labor party members from government offices. A revolutionary union petition to President Calles demands action.
Berlin dispatch reports 28 year old mechanic Martin von Halder of Milwaukee died after a revolver duel with Albert Flattau an escaped convict. Flattau a Brandenburg prison escapee shot at von Halder in an apartment building as Flattau fired on his former wife Emma 82 who fled with a child to the street. Von Halder prevented the killer from reaching the street before being fatally wounded.
Dr. Hubert Work announced that the national headquarters for the Republican presidential campaign will be in Washington with a Chicago branch. He said New York will host the eastern division treasurer’s office and the speaker’s bureaus for the combined national senatorial and congressional committees. No larger headquarters beyond these is planned.
Detroit reports its fifteenth heat death as Mrs. Sophia Henderson, 22, collapsed at home and did not regain consciousness. The city, sapped by ten days of heat, saw cooler weather briefly with storms, then a rise in temperatures expected later today.
In Chicago near Townsend Street, Joseph Caternatta, an Italian man, was shot six times by two men as he left for work. Police found two pistols beside the body and sighted the assailants fleeing the area. Authorities link the killing to the ongoing Black Hand war with no motive yet established.
An 11 year old boy named Raymond Johnson claimed Chicago as his home after being found four miles north of Clare. He said he had been abducted by a man in a large truck but local authorities doubted the tale and arranged return to his mother in Chicago. Chicago police also believe he ran away of his own accord.
Major Thomas G. Lanphier confirmed a plan to resign from the Army Air Service to join Col. Charles A. Lindbergh in the Trans Continental Air Transport company. He said the firm aims to establish national routes and later expand internationally.
Paris July 24 The ministry of marines announced the airplane Le Frezate now at Horta Azores cannot continue for a week. Lieutenant Paris, pilot of the trans Atlantic seaplane, must await repair parts for the forward motor before starting for the United States.
George W. Welsh of Grand Rapids announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for governor opposing Gov. Fred W. Green. He denounced the administration as the most expensive in state history and pledged to reduce the automobile weight tax and gasoline tax, while promising clean efficient public service.
Governor Alfred E. Smith announced that August 22 will be the day he is notified as the Democratic Presidential candidate. The ceremonies will begin at 7 00 p m daylight saving time on the steps of the New York State Capitol in Albany.
The Michigan Supreme Court reversed Carl Christenson's conviction for selling malt extract, discharging him. Justice George M. Clark wrote that the sale is not an offense under the prohibition statute, unanimously ruling the legislature did not intend such a prohibition.
The department of speech at Central State Teachers College will present three one act plays at the auditorium on Thursday July 26 at 8 PM. The lineup includes The Twelve Pound Look by J M Barrie Se by Eugene O Neill and The Awakening a color fantasy by Della Crowder Miller. Tickets are on sale at the college and Normal Drug and Book Store.
Joe Paniucki of the Dave Crowley farm in Wise township was brought before Justice M. Wardrop on a complaint by his wife alleging Sunday night assault and cruel abuse. He denied the charge and a hearing will be held when the wife can testify.
The Republican nomination for United States senator was secured by Arthur H. Van denberg after Detroit State Senator Milton R. Palmer withdrew his bid. Michigan Attorney General Wilber N. Brucker ruled Palmer’s withdrawal legal, clearing Palmer’s name from nomination certificates.
Foster of Mt. Pleasant pleaded guilty in Justice Wardrop's court to driving while drunk. He was fined $50 and assessed 45 days in county jail plus costs. Arrested Sunday evening by Officer Ed Ball, he has not yet secured money to pay the fine.
Sacred Heart parish will host a farewell party for Rev. F. L. Mc Laughlin at the Knights of Columbus hall Wednesday at eight o'clock in the evening.
In Santander Spain Nina and Elena claim first in their classes in the trans Atlantic race started June 30 from New York. Nina finishes at 2 56 52 p m Elena at 4 19 55 p m. Rose wrecked at sea. Nina owned by Paul Nammond and Elihu Root Jr. reception by officials and townspeople after long vigil.
Bert Hassell announced a planned dawn departure for a one stop flight from Rockford to Stockholm via Mt Evans and Greenland. Parker Cramer, aviation inspector, will navigate. the Stinson monoplane The Greater Rockford carries backers from the chamber of commerce and signals readiness at Greenland for the trans Atlantic leg.
Senator Palmer says he will withdraw from the Republican nomination battle for both long and short terms. He notes he was drafted by State Senator Arthur E. Wood and sent a telegram to Senator Vandenberg citing party harmony and 25 years of friendship as reasons. No other candidate opposes Vandenberg for either term.
About 40 members of the Isa bella chapter of the Michigan Society for Crippled Children met at the city library to organize a chapter and plan a clinic. A three-ward board of directors will be elected initially with Mt Pleasant representation, and future township directors will be added as membership grows. Directors chosen were Floyd Mitchell from the first ward, Carl Bishop from the second, and Dr. CO. M. Baskerville from the third. The group will appoint officers after the board is formed. School census records show 28 crippled children, 20 not on last year’s Mt. Pleasant Rotary list, to be investigated for possible treatment. Arrangements are underway for two crippled children’s clinics soon.
In Copenhagen July 24 United Press reports Umberto Nobile and 15 Italia crew members head home after the polar flight disaster at Spitzbergen. Stranded 63 days, two dead, seven with Nobile at Kings Bay, six missing, Nobile injured and unable to stand. They travel by train via Kiruboden Malmoe and Trelleborg to Italy, shedding Stockholm duties to speed recovery and comply with Mussolini orders.
