Detective Arthur Tuease of the state department of public safety, secret service division, departed Lansing for Prescott to return Kenneth Deacon who is wanted on an escape charge from the Grand Rapids road camp dated August 25, 1928. Deacon is serving one to five years for larceny at the Ionia reformatory. Extradition papers were issued by the governor's office.
In Columbus Ohio and Indianapolis Indiana the inaugural U P A T flights launched the coast to coast air railway. The City of Columbus and City of Wichita carried 16 passengers each from New York arriving earlier today. Secretary Lamont triggered the start as Ford brothers attended the ceremony. Major Langhier and Casey Jones observed the inaugural flight in Indianapolis heading to St Louis.
An earthquake of heavy intensity rocked downtown Los Angeles at 8 45 a m today. Whittier reported initial damage with a plate glass window breaking at the First National Bank and plaster falling from walls. Glendale felt only mild shaking as the United Press office trembled during seven seconds of movement.
Chicago report says Antin Bowler the Berlin bound amphibian plane may be down near Hudson Bay trading post at Cape Chiciey after a five hour flight. No word from Bowler while signals heard on WGN radio. pilots Parker D. Cramer Robert Gast and reporter Robert Wood were aboard. Weather may have forced a landing at one of two Hudson Bay posts about 100 miles from Cane Chidley.
Two boys aged 11 and 14 faced murder charges in Flint for the death of Merrill A. Putman eight, blamed on a gang initiation ritual called the royal bumps. An autopsy found blood poisoning from a leg scratch linked to the incident.
London reports renewed worry over King George V’s health as a planned Sandringham visit was postponed to allow royal doctors to decide on X-ray examination for a sinus condition. Officials say there is no fever rise and the monarch is not confined to his residence.

The final step in the state’s legal battle was expected to proceed in Detroit this afternoon with a plea to dismiss an injunction. Petitioners Frederick C. Pohlmeyer George H Johnston Marguerite Dunnebecke Ralph Peckham and Blennor Hutzele were among those denied.

The Detroit Players tent show company opened last evening with The Baby Cyclone a Cohan comedy. Helen Morrow Douglas Rowland Joseph Lighthill and Nellie Hoover lead a lively cast. Tonight they perform The Monster a mystery comedy set in a yogi’s home featuring Wm. Sharon as a comic tramp and a romance between Rowland and Morrow.
Maurice Greathouse former University of Illinois football star is recovered from a crevice on Mount Rainier after an eight hour descent. Edwin A. Wetzel also died in the same climb weeks earlier while Charles Brown led the search glimpse as other climbers were rescued.
Newcastle England July 8 Four Roman forts and a section of Harriott's all have been included in the gate of the Chesters, an historic Northumberland estate. Much of the property was bought by tenant farmers. The forts, once outposts of the Roman empire, are well preserved.
Dr Theunissen of Mt Pleasant captured first with 75 strokes on the 18 hole course in a July 4 local club tournament. Charles Ball of Plymouth took second in the annual event. other places followed with K P Brooks Frank Theisson Bob Northway Mort Gallager Chas Carnahan as top finishers.
D S Way ney Zimmerly set a new world non stop distance record for light airplanes flying from Brownsville Texas to Winnipeg Manitoba. The 1500 mile trip took 16 hours arriving at 6 45 p m after a 2 45 a m takeoff. The flight covered 753 miles longer than the previous record amid clouds and fog.
In Detroit yesterday a fire engulfed the main grandstand of an east side park stadium during a crowd of about 2000. More than 125 were injured with seven in serious condition as gas fumes and a possible lighter sparked the blaze. The arson squad found no sign of deliberate ignition and blamed a dropped lighter near dry wooden stands.
Mrs Ralph Boyd of Kalamazoo was burned to death and her six year old daughter fatally burned when a car driven by her husband exploded after striking a culvert near Grand Rapids early Sunday. The mother died in the wreckage and the child was severely burned.
Franklin Hoffman 18 son of Mr and Mrs Roy Hoffman Sherman township drowned while swimming the outlet channel at Coldwater Lake late Sunday afternoon. The body recovered at midnight after companions failed to rescue him. Survived by parents and three sisters. Funeral Wednesday at 2 pm Sherman City Methodist Church.
Word reached Mt. Pleasant shortly after noon that Arthur Rowlader died in Dearborn where he had resided for several years. G. J. Stinson rushed to Dearborn to bring the body to Mt. Pleasant and will lay him to rest at his daughter Mrs. A J Carroll’s home on South College Avenue.
Milimaé Sonson of Flint Michigan announced plans to attempt a run over Niagara Falls day with a rubber ball system built by a Cleveland firm. The last successful float over the cataract was Jean Lidster of Springfield Massachusetts who did so last summer in a similar ball.
Detroit public safety official Daniel Crowley argues higher city speeds increase congestion due to greater spacing needed between fast vehicles. He supports a 20 mph limit to maximize safe, uniform flow and reduce starts and stops caused by parked vehicles and loading trucks. He warns higher speeds would raise collision risk and cut efficiency.
