President Hoover argued a sound economic policy will sustain employment and goods demand via prudent construction. He spoke to the Lake City governors noting public works cost 1.7 billion in six months, surpassing 1929 boom, and urged continued effort to balance cycles and ease hardships.
Harold Speedy Lloyd testified in federal court defending a $1 million plagiarism suit filed by Mrs. H. G. Witwer widow of a humorist. He argued The Freshman was not copied from Witwer’s Emancipation of Rodney. Lloyd listed school life books like Frank Merriwell to back his claim and faces further evidence next Tuesday.
Michigan motorists paid 386,978 more to the state for automobile licenses in the first six months of 1980 than in the same period last year. Receipts totaled 20,314,131 for 1,288,820 vehicles with 1,098,240 being passenger cars.
Detroit July 1 XU R Fred Reynolds 21 received 1 1/2 to 15 years in Jackson Prison under habitual criminal act for stealing a 50 cent undershirt. The ruling reflects a severe penalty for a repeat offender.
The city treasurer reports 258 Pleasant property owners paid taxes before closing time. Total June city tax receipts reached 46292.97 with more than half of the 71586.05 annual total already received. Interest accrues at 1 percent for July and 1 percent monthly thereafter on unpaid taxes. June collections also include 48213.61 for June and 1920.64 in miscellaneous items such as water rent cemetery receipts and library funds.
A summer session clinic at Central State Teachers College will treat stuttering lisping cleft palate speech and other disorders. J M Heanfy directs diagnostics and a speech correction class handles exercises. Students or residents of Mr Pleasant may consult in room 156 Administration building between 9 and 10 and 2 and 3.
Detroit inspector Joe Garvin, on six months leave, is reinstated by Police Commissioner Thomas E. Wilcox with one assignment to capture the man who shot him on January 2. Garvin reports to Chief of Detectives By Ac Mittee and may work under Bert A. McPherson but need not take orders from him.
Oroyal Nowack, Kentucky star, joins his All American brother Butch Nowack as line coach at Central State Teachers College gridiron camp. Dutch Lodewyk handles the freshman squad while Orval Nowack, ex Kentucky player, will coach line candidates arriving Septem ber 10 for the season.
The Cole No.1 well is drilling at 2700 feet about 1 to 2 miles west of the Marthey No.1 in the Mt. Pleasant oil fields. Analysts expect a Dundee strike within a week and see potential to locate the Seaton field edge or the center of a producing area. This wildcat-leaning well follows a period of high completions and may indicate new territory opening nearby.
Charles W. Kennedy aged 59 a janitor at Fancher High School committed suicide by cutting his throat with a razor shortly before noon today. A student found his body in the boys lavatory on the first floor and Bruce Bacon alerted staff. Kennedy, married with two children, had been despondent for some time.
Western grain farmers move little grain to markets while harvest advances in the southwest. Wheat collected by harvesters goes to wagons and trucks, often staying in yards awaiting better prices. Receipts show 533 cars yesterday. Chicago wheat closed at 82 cents, down 11-4. Wagon prices ranged 65 to 70 cents across states Texas Oklahoma Kansas.
Toledo July 1 U P Assert ing that the enforcement of the prohibition law is a failing experiment and that the government can hardly hope to successfully enforce the law now or in the future William H O Neil chief of the enforcement division of Toledo and northwestern Ohio today announced his resignation from office.
New York July 1 The police set a guard around the home of Rev J W Cooper pastor of the Emmanuel Baptist church in Brooklyn after he received a second letter threatening death signed by 38X Police doubt the letter is tied to a maniac who killed two men in Queens and earlier a hemp rope with a hangman's noose was sent to the minister as a warning.
CHICAGO July 1 United Press Foster the man who bought six snub nosed pistols used in the assassination of Tribune reporter Alfred J Lingle is under arrest with three of his henchmen in Los Angeles Pat Roche in charge of the single murder investigation said he would seek Foster's immediate return to Chicago for questioning though he believes Foster may resist extradition Roche named companions Frank Fisher George Davis and Marvin Hart as Moran gang members There is a possibility one of the three may be Red Forsythe and authorities asked Los Angeles to send fingerprints Forsythe is suspected of actually firing the gun.
Lansing July 1 Governor Green refused to indicate when he will answer a petition from 185000 voters urging a third term bid. He avoided committing to run while noting he would not be hurried and that his statement may come later. Petitions were presented by Detroit supporters who urged continuation of his unfinished program.
Mt Pleasant boy scouts to spend up to two weeks at Camp Rotary on Lake Dee Bee eight miles north of Clare. Camp run by Saginaw Rotary with H G Nagel supervising six assistants and five lifeguards. Scouts stay in army tents with board floors and leatherwork classes available. Fees are five dollars per week for locals and seven dollars for nonlocals. after mid August girls take over the camp for Camp Tire in Saginaw with plans to fund girl scout work next year.
The county road commission holds bids for three miles of gravel roads in Lincoln Denver and Gilmore townships and a cement bridge at the Nottawa Gilmore line over Schofield Creek. The commission, led by Charles F. Curtis with members John Lynch and William Harrison, convened at 2 PM.
Branston, flying a New York to Atlantic mail run, claims the dubious honor after removing his pants for comfort and misplacing them when he leaned forward to look out the cockpit window. Rowan county residents are asked to watch for the missing garment.
John and Kenneth Hunter, coal miners turned aviators, extend their Stinson De Soto monoplane flight to 477 hours above Sky Harbor Chicago amid fog and rain. Spectators watch as radio hookup plans broadcast the landmark. The brothers continue despite weather and exhaustion.
The Central State Teachers College library expands hours for the summer session. Beginning Tuesday the library opens 7 a m to 10 p m on college days and 8 a m to 10 p m on Saturdays. Summer staff includes Sumner W McAllister as librarian and Anna M Kellogg as reference librarian with department heads Eudocia Stratton and Edna Birchard. James Fern once an ace of Chicago's Prohibition Bureau, now in custody on liquor theft allegations. Detectives seized about 30,000 dollars worth of Indian Hill and Gold Medal whiskey at the Roma Inn, linked to a gang that allegedly broke into a government warehouse and moved liquor by truck.
Jack Johnson of Granger Lake and party, including Professors Martell and Wheeler, reported landing a 25 1 4 pound gray trout during a Canada fishing expedition. Hood and Mitchell contributed notable catches including a 9 1 2 pound salmon trout. The trip, hosted at a logging camp 80 miles from the nearest settlement, was authorized by a Canadian lumber firm president Mr Hood.

State Senator A. E. Achard of the 28th district was arrested by Conservation Officers on a closed lake in Freeman township Clare County with a boatload of fish. He pled guilty before Justice Youngs of Harrison and was fined $20 plus $13.25 in costs.
In Clare area the Bothwell oil well ten miles north of town faced water in the Marshall sand but through cementing the issue was overcome. The drill now reaches 1700 feet and the Bowler well at 2200 feet progresses well. Peninsula Petroleum, owners, expect Dundee sand in about two weeks.
SAGINAW July 1 Fish life in the Tittabawassee river was nearly wiped out after breaks at Dow Chemical Co Midland acid ponds. By Monday morning pollution reached near the Central Street bridge and the Saginaw water works closed the intake pumps to limit contaminated water. Alfred Eckert superintendent of purification ordered raw water pumping halted for six to eight hours to preserve treated water from a phenol taste.
Clare July 1 Prosectuing Attorney T. Carl Holbrook elected president of the Brucker for Governor club at a Friday meeting. Mrs Lulu Murphy of Harrison is vice president and B N Mercer of Clare is secretary treasurer. Each township and precinct is represented by committeemen from the county Republican organization.
George E. Scott, a Chicago businessman, sues L Wainwright Ernst, a Prime Beverage official, for 100000. He claims after dancing partners and an invite to walk, Ernst struck him, breaking his jaw and leaving him unconscious on the lawn. Ernst has not explained the act.
Central State Teachers college opened summer school with a first day total of 1 294 students including 893 women and 401 men. Monday's 1 287 set a new first day summer session mark since 1924, aided by rising standards in teaching.
In Grand Rapids a Chicago woman, Margaret Dewant, was stung by a bee while driving and lost control of her car which left the road and plunged into a ditch. All four occupants were badly injured, including Albert Phelps of Lansing with a broken back and two Lansing women Mrs. Caroline and Mrs. Groall.

Ann Arbor reports enrollment rose from seven in 1841 to about 11 555 during the 1928 1929 regular session with summer and extension students pushing near 14 000. Foreign students from Canada China India and Japan were prominent. women expanded from six in 1876 to one third of the total thereafter.
Captain Kingsford Smith and three companions returned from Washington after lunch with President Hoover. The Southern Cross crew praised the president as delightful and planned to depart for California likely Wednesday or Thursday.
Four Central State Teachers College graduates join the summer session to pursue postgraduate studies. John Warriner, son of the president, earned a Michigan degree and will enter Harvard in fall. George Clark, ex Central instructor, studies advanced English and languages. Ivan D. Cole, Central alumnus, trains to teach English at Ferris Institute starting next September. Allan Wooley, another Central graduate, plans doctoral work at the University of Michigan after the summer term.
Detroit July 1 A youth lived death rode in a collision at a northwest intersection. David Halverine 18 was killed four others injured. The driver David Plascoe 18 fled and is sought. Milton Goldberg 20 said Plascoe traveled at 65 mph brushed Halverine’s car and rolled over.
Kalamazoo July 1 1840 students enrolled at Western State Teachers College on the first day of the summer term an increase of 125 over the opening day of last year.
English aviator Captain Wynne Eyton arrived at St Johns Newfoundland with a De Havilland moth plane prepared for a solo Atlantic crossing. The craft will be assembled at Lester's Field and the fliers plans to attempt the historic single handed flight when weather permits, following Lindbergh's example.
