James L. Morehouse, former Battle Creek postoffice employee, confessed to killing Cleo Platt, Eaton County deputy sheriff, in Charlotte on December 17 claiming the shooting was accidental. He wrote and signed the statement after being confronted by accomplice Llaw Thorne Sutton. He said Platt was on the running board and he tried to push him off, then fired. he later found two empty chambers and threw the gun into the river. He was arrested in Sturgis and brought to Eaton County.
