James J. Britt of the federal prohibition bureau cites figures to defend enforcement work before the Anti-Saloon League in Detroit. Over ten years agents claim 550000 arrests 245000 illicit distilleries 9060000 gallons of liquor 45000 automobiles 1400 boats with forfeiture value 1386 million.
A hearing before the Public Utilities Commission is set for January 28 to approve the sale of the Mecosta Telephone Exchange for 1000 dollars. The action involves D F E Wilber of Mecosta as administrator for F P Wilber’s estate and C N Wilber as purchaser.
Eight men died and four were seriously injured in an explosion at Lillybrook Coal Company mine number one near Beckley West Virginia. The blast occurred during a short Sunday shift about a mile from the mine mouth and rescue efforts were hindered by bad roads and weather. State mining officials opened an investigation into possible negligence.
The Mammoth Petroleum corporation won charter approval to develop 2160 acres in Clare county and seek new leases near existing wells. One well, Bothwell No. 1, has begun in Hatton township with J. C. Arthurs as contractor. State Geologist R A Smith endorses the project.
William Carroll, 78, was beaten and stripped by three youths after helping them free a stalled car in West St Johns. They bound him, took $270, fled, and left him in the snow before he escaped to a neighbor for help. State and county authorities were alerted.
Spokane, Jan 20 Fliers of the First Pursuit group completing the Arctic Patrol flight from Selfridge Field Mich will begin the return trip tomorrow from Newman Lake near Spokane. Planes serviced today for the journey home with duralumin runners replaced by heavier corrugated iron skins after tests showed lighter metal could not endure the trip.
A Rome janitor found a jeweled collar with a black pearl from the Portuguese royal family after Crown Prince Humbert's wedding reception. He handed it to the Rome governor Prince Francesco Boncompagna-Ludovico, who returned it to Victoria, wife of the former King Manuel of Portugal. The save went unreported until today.
Five world powers led by Great Britain and the United States convened at No 10 Downing Street for final talks on the London Naval Conference. Premier Ramsay MacDonald hosted the session five minutes after dawn as delegates prepare for formal opening tomorrow with each chief presenting views on naval limits. Former local man James J. Montgomery died at Sparrow Hospital Lansing early Sunday from a stroke suffered the day before while attending a basketball game. He was fifty one, survived by wife two sons and five daughters. A longtime employee of Mt Pleasant Daily Times later in Lansing, he was active in church and fraternal groups. Funeral services will be held in Lansing Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. with burial in Deepdale Cemetery.
Paris January 20 a French altitude record of 37720 feet was claimed by flier Lemoigne after a Villacoublay flight in a 450 horsepower monoplane. He did not pass the world mark and suffered intense cold with instruments reading 76 degrees below zero. Earlier in May he reached 31388 feet with a 12022 3 pound load.

Pontiac dispatch reports Lester Hardiman a factory worker from White Lake disappeared Friday night while driving to Pontiac. His car was found stalled eight miles away and his frozen body was located about 100 feet from his cottage after a search. The wreck underscores harsh winter conditions trapping travelers.
Detroit January 20 The Anti-Saloon League plans a statewide drive to educate for Prohibition as R N Holsaple outlines a 1930 start for gospel temperance revivals in Michigan beginning in Owosso covering Shiawassee county. Pastors will lead nightly meetings and films by Harvey Kellogg will be shown. demonstrations drew 175 to 375 attendees daily with a majority of men, many nonchurchgoers.
Miss May Sweeney died at her father P W Sweeney's home on South Main Street after a four week illness. Born in Meredith she lived in the city since infancy and was the only daughter, praised for her duty and charity. Survived by her father and five brothers James John Miles Frank and Rev Raymond Sweeney. Funeral set for Tuesday at Sacred Heart Church at 9 30 AM.
Williamston January 20 Work on the Hilmar Oil company well pushed to block the flow of salt water and secure a definite check on oil prospects. Homer Murphy vice president said the well released a substantial flow overnight when opened but a solid check was not possible due to heavy salt water.
University of Michigan fraternities challenge Senate committee actions restricting freshman living in two houses starting next fall no freshmen may reside in fraternity houses until their second semester in 1931 no freshman may be initiated into fraternities. George C. Willey and other leaders call the measure railroaded through by Dean J A Lursky without input from fraternities.
Lansing reports that Oscar G. Olander requests 17000 from the state to fund a police and sheriff training school at East Lansing and to arm the state police with three high powered cars six machine guns bullet proof vests tear bombs and other weapons. The request will go to the State Administrative Board after review by the State Crime Commission.
Detroit January 20 forecast calls for mostly fair skies in the north with snow moving into the south tonight and Tuesday. Colder conditions expected in extreme north portion with gentle to moderate west winds.
San Clemente reports 16 dead as a Maddux-T A T line transport crashes in a field near dusk after a weekend at Agua Caliente. The 14 passengers plus two pilots were killed. eight men and eight women are named, with crews pinned beneath the motors.
