A basement garment factory fire in a Harlem tenement killed six people and left about 200 homeless. Firemen found a woman on the third floor holding a child, with another woman and baby nearby. Rescues and an emergency hospital were set up as residents fled using ladders.
H. W. Marty O'Toole of Southwest Air Service and Melvin Smith of the 52nd Aviation School Group Kelly Field Texas were killed when their plane dove and crashed from about 700 feet near Tucson after the motor failed. Smith had been detailing to service Army aircraft and both men took to the air.
Ohio crash kills 30 year old pilot Dxl Hay of Lranscon tinental airline while attempting to land at Toledo airport. Witnesses say a wing collapsed at about 75 feet, and the high altitude prevented a recovery.
The Klumpn farmhouse southwest of the city burned Saturday afternoon around five o clock. John Klumpp and family were away. four children stayed with relatives while the others sheltered elsewhere. Wind fanned the blaze and the house, two years old, was destroyed with all contents. Cause undetermined. some loss covered by insurance.
Peter Kudzinowski, convict in the murder of Joseph Storelli, was sentenced to death in the electric chair by Judge Charles M. Egan for the week of February 24. The verdict and date were announced in Jersey City.
Isabella county and neighboring counties show rising returns from weight and gasoline taxes over 1926 to 1928. State totals indicate county payments climbed from 7.21 million in 1926 to 12.22 million in 1928, an 85 percent rise, with gasoline weight tax receipts rising to 9.86 million in 1928.

In Lansing on January 16 the state conservation department defended stripping rainbow trout spawn for hatcheries. Officer Ayler said few fish are lost, about three percent. Manistee County threatens legal action as officials in Manistee rail against the practice and call for an end to it.

Landsing, Jan. 16. A months long mystery ended as conservation officers arrested and convicted John Bonnia of Monroe for operating live fish boxes in the Raisin river near Trenton. Bonnia was fined 100 dollars and more than a ton of small perch were confiscated and returned to the river.
The White Star liner Majestic arrived in New York 15 hours late after a severe Atlantic storm last Monday. One man was killed and many injured lightly as huge waves flooded lower decks and ripped hatch covers free. 1,171 aboard included 439 first class. third class and crew bore the brunt as water poured into lower compartments.
In Terre Haute Indiana a building collapse after a mysterious explosion left three dead and four injured. Fire crews searched the wreckage today for additional victims believed trapped while Bert Culver a Michigan tourist was reported missing in front of the structure.
Two Mt. Pleasant basketball teams won in games last night as Indian Big Rapids beat Big Rapids 21 to 12 and Sacred Heart Academy opened its season with a 25 to 13 victory over St. Joseph's Bay City. The Indians reserves also defeated Mt. Pleasant Reserves 19 to 9. Owosso awaits next for both schools with Jan 22 at home and Jan 25 away in Owosso.
Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Snider of Clare marked their 62nd wedding anniversary at their Vernon hill home Saturday evening with many friends and neighbors. Married in Canada on Jan 12 1867 they moved to Wise township in 1890 and to their current residence in 1900. They have seven children Wesley and Gertrude Clark James Verona township Percy Detroit Mrs Hattie White Ann Arbor Mrs Sadie McKoracher Flint and Mrs Ella Farrington Flint. James and Mrs McKoracher could not attend this year. Mr Snider is 87 and active about the house and garden. Mrs Snider is 82 and handles all housework.
The Kellogg multilateral peace treaty was approved by the U.S. Senate by a large majority with 85 votes in favor and 1 opposed. President Coolidge supporters argued the pact would stabilize world conditions and promote lasting peace.
Central State travels to Kalamazoo next Saturday to challenge Western State in a key Michigan Collegiate Conference battle. Western State, led by Capt. Nester and the Grein brothers, seeks the title while hoping to derail Central’s top perch.
