The Battle vs Pure Oil case, argued in circuit court, seeks a Supreme Court review. Judges awarded the Battles 80 days to file a bill of exceptions over land holdings in the Isa bella Midland oil fields, with heirs alleging Mr Battle was incompetent when deeds were signed.
DETROIT Jan 14 A 22 man grand jury in session was urged by the common council to probe the $2 100 000 Southfield road sewer collapse. The council resolution asked the jury to determine if collusion between city sewer inspectors and private contractors contributed to the severe failures.
In Jacksonville on January 14 UPI reports Federal Judge Alexander Ackerman asked the district attorney to study whether any law can prevent representatives of foreign organizations from distributing communist literature and organizing communists in his district. He said the country welcomes immigrants of good character but not those aiming to stir up strife.
Federal officials announce Michigan will receive 2583.15 as its share of national forest receipts for 1930. Of this 1845.11 funds come from 25 percent of total net receipts allocated by state. The money goes to counties for schools and roads, with an additional 10 percent for road use. Michigan’s total includes 738.04 for roads. The state bears no forest maintenance costs and receipts rose by nearly 0.5 million dollars from the previous year.
A carp weighing fourteen pounds was caught near the Roosevelt Refinery as Milo Johnson stood ready with a spear. The fish, described as a king of the stream, was last seen hanging in front of the Richmond and Shangle Hardware Store at 121 South Main.

Judges include Prof. C. S. Larzelere and George I. Giniard. Readers may submit text 500 to 1000 words with optional photos.
The National Safety Council report shows 82,500 traffic deaths in 1930 across 32 states, about 75 percent of the population. Fatalities rose four percent from 1920, with rural areas increasing while cities improved due to driver license laws.
Detroit police claimed resolution of the Kingston Michigan bank robbery after arresting Louis Ugiein 36 of Detroit and four others. Ugiein said the January 8 heist at the Kingston State Bank netted 2189 dollars and was planned at Frank Matijevick’s home in Pontine. Two suspects were jailed in Kingston and three others were earlier apprehended and sent back for trial.

Grover C Dillman says revenue from weight and gas taxes fell short, with 1931 license sales lagging. Wayne County faces a $110,760 loss. total gas tax take was $21,247,760, leaving $6,181,380 payable after stabilization. Counties listed include Clare Gladwin Gratiot Isabella Mecosta Midland Montcalm.

House approves a joint resolution. will go to the senate as floor debate begins. Speaker Docey and Rep. Bartlett push for rapid action and possible partial payment before March 4 adjournment.
The Arthur Tice Ice Company plans to begin the annual harvest later this week, weather permitting. About 30 workers are expected to be employed to cut and store ice, with 8 to 9 inch thickness currently available and storage depth needing 1 to 2 inches more. In Petoskey, Superintendent H. C. Spitter and Dr. Robert Armstrong join the Moor County Northern Michigan Public Health unit. In Flint, Buick Motor Co. president Edward T. Strong opens the annual automobile show, with about 70 models on display.

The Senate confirmed Edgar B. Brassard of Utah as a member of the reorganized tariff commission, ending a heated and protracted battle. Lincoln Dixon of Indiana also won confirmation, completing the administration’s six-person slate. Brassard’s approval calms the dispute and supports the tariff program after months of recess appointments.
In Chicago on January 14, suspect V Brothers faced indictment for the killing of Alfred Lingle amid a flood of lawyers. Attorney Powell offered to join Cannwell, Tyrrell, Piquett, Ward, and Krum. Brothers refused further talks as his mother, Mrs. Rose Cordell Jessen, sought funds in St. Louis. In Lisbon, the Dornier DC X flying boat planned a January 25 to 31 Rio de Janeiro relay via Madeira, the Canary Islands, Fernando Noronha, Natal, and Bahia after wing damage in London was repaired.
The Isabella County Red Cross chapter launches a $400 fund drive as part of a national $10,000,000 relief effort for drought and unemployment. Funds will be collected at county banks, with Dr. R. M. Brown as chairman and Mrs. O. W. Troutman as vice-chairman.
