Taxes collected in Mt Pleas ant on January 9 broke all prior daily records with 38 358 29 paid to city treasurer Miss Bessie M Brown. The total levy is 185 254 41 with 38 000 plus in cash and the rest by check money order or draft. Some taxpayers paid penalties of 4 percent for late taxes due to date confusion.
About 1,000 U.S. Marines are en route to Nicaragua to assist forces already in the country against General Augusto Sandino. The final four companies from Hampton Roads are expected to arrive within eight days, bringing Marine strength to about 2,400. fog delayed the fleet aboard the U S Oglala.
State and county authorities investigated a mine blast at Industrial Goal company No 18 in West Frankfort Illinois that killed 21 workers. Seven hundred men were in the mine. 136 remained in the explosion zone as rescue teams battled gas and aftershocks.
Peter Blying of Battle Creek, a wholesale fur dealer, was arrested for trafficking in illegal Megal furs across seven southwestern Michigan counties. He pleaded guilty and paid 50 dollars in fine and costs after supplying authorities with a list of trappers. Conservation officers are rounding up the trappers named.
A directed verdict of no cause for action was returned in the Commercial Investment Company of Chicago versus J Russell Hagan and Ira P Chase. The case against Hagan was by default. the action concerned a car financed by the investment firm and claimed as a mortgage not recorded.
Manistee Mich Jan 10 Augusta Kruger 103 died yesterday. She had three husbands in Germany before coming to Manistee where she married a fourth. He died sixteen years ago.
Lansing January 10 — W. W. Potter issued an opinion to Webster H. Pearce indicating that teacher contributions to the state pension fund form a contract not impairable by legislation. The ruling addresses a legislative repeal without a replacement clause. About 600 pensioners rely on funds. payments may continue though local direction was unclear. Wayne county not covered.
Phillies take three straight to near clinch in city tournament bowling. They beat the Nationals to push to 25 wins in 33, with high single of 906 last week, while Athletics upset Cubs by taking two of three as standings tighten.
A fire in Manistee destroyed the 51 1 year old Larsen block last night causing about 160000 in damage. World War veteran John Vielingki was overcome by smoke while helping fight the blaze with fellow American Legion members.

Mrs. Joseph Nelli returning from Ann Arbor with her hospitalized child learned her oldest son Dominic drowned on Cedar River near the New York Central bridge. The ice could not bear his weight.
The funeral for Frank Walsh will be held at his mother’s home 1802 Lyon Street Wednesday afternoon at 2 30. He was the fifth son of Henry Thayer Walsh and Penelope Phillipps Walsh pioneer Mt Pleasant residents. Born at Bamber farm west of Mt Pleasant fifty one years ago he lived in Mt Pleasant area. For thirty five years he worked for Gorham Bros Company. A long illness ended Monday at 11 30 am. He leaves a widow Bessie Cuthbert Walsh three children Winnifred Donald and Ormond Joseph an aged mother three brothers and five sisters.
Thomas Smith a 22 year old from near Ionia died Monday afternoon when a tree trunk fell toward him pinning him and crushing his skull as he and his father had saved the tree. The youth survived by his wife, his parents, one sister Lucille and one brother Clarence both of Ionia. The accident marks the second fatality in the county within a day.
New York January 10 aviators Bert Acosta Arthur Goebel Clarence Chamberlin and Edward Rickenbacker were honored guests as the twenty eighth annual auto show shifted focus to aviation. Chrysler Sales Corp hinted at lower prices while dealers showcased motion displays and new parts novelties amid the color filled exhibit.
Ly man Barber, an American mining engineer, tells how he was held by Mexican bandits for three weeks demanding 7500 in ransom. He killed four armed guards with stones and broken bottles during captivity and fled, returning home to his wife worn and exhausted. He had faced a death sentence for not delivering the ransom.
Kansas City Mo Jan 10 U P Initial steps toward an insanity defense for Edward Hickman will be taken tomorrow. Attorney Jerome Walsh will obtain depositions from former high school classmates and others who knew Hickman to argue he suffered dementia praecox when he killed 12 year old Marian Parker in Los Angeles. He also plans statements from former Arkansas state asylum officials where Hickman’s mother was detained.
The Mt. Pleasant Chamber of Commerce announces a three day business institute led by J. W. Griest. Sessions run January 11 to 13 with noon luncheons at Park Hotel and various evening talks on sales, advertising, and community trade expansion at local venues.
In Detroit Judge Ray Hart and J.D. Crocker presided over a naturalization session. John Pedjac, a native of Czecho Slovakia, and Adam Bukowski, born in Poland, were granted final documents and became American citizens. Five applicants had cases continued, and two were dismissed.
Detroit January 16. Announcement will be made within days as J Walter Drake outlines Michigan Republicans backing Herbert Hoover for president. Drake says Hoover’s loyalty to Coolidge policies and leadership convinces the state that Hoover is the logical successor after Coolidge declines renomination. Continued on page 6.
George Benedict, a New York resident, was killed in a Fairchild monoplane crash Sunday near Canajoharie New York. The victims include D M Papley Jeany Lieutenant George Benedict of Peoria Illinois and Ray Heimes of Buffalo the pilot. The plane en route from New York to Buffalo disappeared in dense fog. Rescue efforts spanned over twenty hours with wreckage found in swampy terrain. Benedict’s wife and family in Mt Pleasant mourn his loss as funeral plans begin.
Panamanian crowds greeted Colonel Charles Lindbergh as he landed at Panama's new field yesterday. The aviator, on a brief stay, accepted the hospitality and remained undecided about his departure plans as officials extended courtesy and praise.
Four persons were injured in what may have been a fatal explosion at a frame dwelling in the northern Halfway suburb. Fire destroyed the house and nearby well. The blast was blamed on natural gas seeping in.
The American Legion Auxiliary installed new officers in a ceremony at the legion hall with state auxiliary president Mrs. Marion Schirk presiding. Officers named include Norma Nagel president and Pauline Harford vice president, followed by a full slate. A post-installation program featured songs, readings, and tributes, with a pot-luck dinner and dancing to close the evening.
Washington reports President Coolidge begins travel preparations for a six Pan American conference in Havana. Mrs Coolidge joins the delegation led by Charles F Hughes, with the party boarding the Texas voyage from Key West, aiming to arrive in Havana before January 2.
