Enrollment at Central State reached 750 by 2 36 this afternoon as Registrar Barnes reports. About fifty students lined up to register and nearly a hundred more chose courses in the gym. Winter term totals trend below fall records though past winters reached as high as 919 in 1925 and 906 in 1930.
In Lansing Governor Green pardoned 44 short term convicts in the final hours of his administration. Seventeen others were released to be deported or face trial in other states. Notable clemencies include Thelma Whodard, Martha Shafer, Maud Capron, and Rely C. Gurdon, with the latter’s release tied to a bank restitution plan.
Detroit police held two men, Scipio Stewart and George Jackson, who allegedly confessed plans to kidnap a witness in the Jerry Buckley murder case. They were arrested at the witness’s home and held as threats mounted after the grand jury testimony.
Dr M B Jensen of the Central State education department returns to Mount Pleasant after a 2700 mile holiday trip visiting Chicago and St Louis. He attended the American Psychological Association convention in Iowa City December 29 to 31 and spoke informally on December 30 about "The Problem Guide."
Fifty eight crewmen of the U S Army dredge Raritan were saved after the vessel sank near Fort Wadsworth following a collision with the liner City of Montgomery bound from Savannah. Fifty four were picked up by the President and four by a police boat. Captain John Peterson was treated for bruises. Witnesses said an explosion occurred aboard after the crash.
Federal prohibition officers uncovered a large illicit alcohol cooking plant in a five story Detroit warehouse on North Woodward Avenue. Firefighters discovered the complex, with a daily output around 10 000 gallons and equipment valued over 250 000 dollars, including multiple large vats and steel bricked windows.
Detroit January 5 U R Rev Charles Coughlin pastor of the Shrine of the Little Flower Royal Oak says he will not desist from discussing unemployment and labor rights on his nation wide Sunday sermons. He cites protests by certain interests against his so called inflammatory utterances and explains they stem from the churchs stance on unemployment.
Waterbury Connecticut reports the death Sunday of Roger Connor in his 70s. Once a Giants slugger nicknamed the Babe Ruth of the 80s he starred for New York before playing for Philadelphia and St Louis. Connor learned baseball on Waterbury stands and debuted with the Giants in 1878, ending his major league career in 1902 with St Louis.
Washington January 5 Justice Jennings Bailey of the District of Columbia Supreme Court modified the 1920 Packers Consent Decree to permit wholesalers to deal in all classes of food while prohibiting retail sale. The decision, praised by the Swift and Armour factions, allows use of distribution and transport facilities for wholesale food dealings but bans retail entry and stockyard ownership. No Sherman Act violations were found.
Francis Bushaw, 110, Mecosta county's oldest resident and among Michigan's oldest men, died after a paralytic stroke suffered last week. Born in 1820 in St. Clair county, he passed away at his grandson's home. He once rode in an airplane last summer. His daughter Mrs. F Morris resides in South Haven, son Francis M. Bushaw in Kingsley, and two sons in Montana. He leaves seven great great grandchildren.
The body of Marshal Joseph Joffre lay in state at the Chapel of Saint Louis in Paris as thousands of mourners filed by the bier. His left knee amputation was kept secret at his wish. His flag and 40 international decorations surrounded him in a simple cot.
New York January 5. The international day feature includes giants and pygmy cars with 16 cylinders and speeds up to 120 mph alongside smaller models. Robert C. Graham of Graham Paige predicts the show will signal industry trends for the year.
December tax collections for Mt Pleasant totaled 41 560 39 dollars, higher than the previous year s 40 143 42. County figures show January 10 as the likely end of the tax period with no extra penalty for late payment.
Records at the Isabella county clerk’s office reveal rising annual bounty payments for barn rats and sparrows. In 1928 the total was 1,234.54 dollars, in 1929 it reached 2,180.48 dollars, and in 1930 the figure stood at 1,803.25 dollars.

Hundreds of Mt Pleasant students return to class after the holiday recess. High schools Sacred Heart Academy and grade schools start regular programs while Central State and State Teachers College begin Tuesday. Winter term enrollment at the college reached 466, with total expected under 1000. Life staff return early and plan a Wednesday edition, marking a new college journalistic milestone.

Three men from Detroit and Owosso were taken into custody in connection with the kidnapping of Eller Alberti a 13 year old Davison girl. The girl was recovered and returned home along with two Hill sisters near Owosso. Police said all three suspects denied involvement.
Washington January 5 The Wickersham commission status looms as a possible bogey in President Hoover's plan to avoid an extra session after March 4 Congressional leaders say it would be impossible to finish the short session in two months if the report is submitted They advise Hoover to withhold the document until adjournment White House reports indicate the commission may submit its findings after 19 months Hoover aides doubt it is wise to act on the probe without public release and prefer withholding final action for several weeks while the panel resumes sessions.
In England Arkansas Red Cross officials mobilize to feed about 500 destitute farm families suffering from a long drought. Merchants hand out rations to last two to three days as crowds threaten to force entry. Attorney George E Morris works to calm the scene and arrange distribution while outside aid is sought.
Postmaster Wesley Morrison reports a higher overall mail volume in 1930 at Mt Pleasant despite a December 1980 dip compared with 1929. First class mail rose, parcel mail fell, greeting cards peaked at 20 000 on a single pre Christmas day, and staff worked overtime to handle the surge.
Edwin Cassidy, 26, an escaped convict, was shot in the head by state trooper Harry Briggs while resisting arrest in the attic of his aunt’s Midland-area home. Cassidy, who had escaped from the Ionia reformatory, was reported dying. Briggs fired as Cassidy attempted to shoot him. Sheriff W. S. Day and the trooper said officers had traced Cassidy to the aunt’s residence despite protests that he was not there.
In Hampton Roads Virginia on January 5, Mrs. Beryl Hart and William S. MacLaren Jr delayed the New York to Paris flight after a damaged sextant and low fuel forced a return toward Bermuda. They secured a navigation instrument from Annapolis but could not pay for it, postponing the next leg. The crew reported engine and gas tank defects quickly fixed on the Trade Wind seaplane. In Michigan the Berrien county jail went into quarantine as two inmates with smallpox were diagnosed, with vaccination and isolation of others following.
Detroit area forecast calls for rain or snow tonight and into Tuesday morning with colder temperatures inland. Northeast to north winds will be fresh to strong, with readings from Alpena around 32 to 24 in Chicago and Grand Rapids near 32 to 30, Duluth about 20, and Marquette around 28 to 32.
Six men were killed in two crashes on Sunday at Overton Texas and St Joseph Missouri. Dallas residents Addison Noever Horace F Clark and Tom Holcomb died in the Overton Stinson Detroit plane crash after fog limited visibility. At St Joseph a Crewsna mono plane dived to the ground killing pilots Winston Hyatt LeRoy Reimer and passenger Donald Payne.

The new city water well, under construction for weeks, is being pumped with early tests indicating a capacity over existing pumps by more than 40 percent. Current rate stands at 980 gallons per minute, about 1,830,000 gallons daily, with pumping continuing for about two weeks as part of the testing and development before city service begins.

In Brioncon France on the weekend eleven winter sportsmen and six French tourists died in avalanches. Three caravans of mountain climbers vanished in the snow. All victims were experienced in winter climbing as rescue efforts continued.
